    cupramine dosage

what a great collection of stickies on this forum........they have helped me a great deal. thanks.

i am currently in the process of setting up a quarantine to rid my main tank of white spot.
i have followed the guides from here and got to the point where i will be adding my fish to the qt shortly.

my query is regarding the dosage of cupramine to use. on the bottle it says 0.5mg/l, but i have been advised by a couple of people that 0.15mg/l will be sufficient to get rid of the white spot on my fish.
i have a coral beauty angel, yellow tang, pyjama cardinal and 2 percula clowns.

so really i just need to clarify how much i should use with these fish, from what i`ve read it seems the angel is at most risk.
    thanks

Glad the stickies have helped. But one sticky does address your concerns about fish sensitivity to copper. Copper - Treatment, Use, Problems

Cupramine is safe for all Angels. It should be kept in the range of 3 to 6 ppm range after the second addition, as read on the Salifert Copper Test Kit or the Seachem Copper Test Kit. My preference is above 3 but not over 5.

I'm sorry you are being given poor advice on that. Both the manufacturer and I know what is proper for the treatment using this particular medication. Just be sure to follow directions and use the correct Copper Test Kit for verification of concentration.

    just looked at this and could you explain or clarify what is meant by ;
"If you prepare freshly made up saltwater (like you were doing a water change) and test that for copper, you can then use that to dilute your tank sample water for the Salifert Copper test, remembering to account for any copper reading of the freshly prepared water. Thus, you can get the relative accuracy you need from the Salifert Copper Test Kit reference colors. (Just remember to calculate the copper concentration reading by the dilution factor)."

i may be reading it wrong or perhaps i`m a bit slow to pick this up, thanks.

    Re: cupramine dosage

The best is an example of what that says, I think. Maybe/hopefully an example can make that clear.

Let's say I'm using a fictitious copper test kit that has colors at 2 ppm, 5 ppm, 10 ppm and 15 ppm readings. But my reading is below the 5 but above the 2. I would like to know better if I have a 3 or 4.

First, I test some made up, unused, untreated salt water for copper. I read "none detected" with my fictitious test kit. So that is a 'blank.'

I take (I use chemistry measurements/dimensions) 100ml of the copper treated water and add to that 100ml of the blank. My copper concentration in the treated water is now diluted by 1:2. I now test that with my fictitious test kit and it shows 2 ppm copper. So the original concentration of the copper was 2 X 2 = 4 ppm. I now know that 'below 5 ppm' in this case is actually 4 ppm.

Or let's say the diluted results show below 2 ppm copper, then I know the original concentration was above 2 but below 4. This would be about 3.

So using a test kit and dilutions I can find the concentration of copper with my fictitious test kit between 2 and 5 ppm, even though only colors of 2 and 5 are given.

    Hope this is helpful.
