    rust colored algae help

in my 15 gallon fowl one of my pieces of lr has an orange colored algal-like growth on it and i am wondering what this is. Could it be cyanobacteria? Also i get frequent dusty red-orange coatings on my glass. is this cyano? My nitrates tend to run in the 30-50 range on this tank because of the small water volume could this be causing the bloom whatever it may be? i was hoping to transfer most of the rock in this tank to a 55 gallon tank i am cycling right now, but i dont think with this orange growth it would be safe. i was also wondering if this was cyanobacteria would the treatment for this harm invertebrates. any opinions on this orange algal bloom are more than appreciated.

    Re: rust colored algae help

Im new around here but im pretty sure youre talking about Diatoms. Its common for tanks to get it. Itll go away, just clean your glass, and make sure you have good water circulation. For now id wait before transferring the live rock into your bigger tank.

Just my opinion, im sure someone more knowledgeable will either agree, or tell me im a dip and need to keep reading

    Hope this helps!! :]

That size aquarium really isn't suitable for marine fish with the exceptions being babies that haven't grown up much.

The orange you see could be a sponge or other hitchhiker with the rock. Unlikely to be an algae. But without a photo, I can't say much more than that.

The rust colored or brown coating is usually diatoms. They love new tanks and tanks of poor water quality. They also need silica to grow their shells. These usually are reduced in numbers are the tank ages, provided water quality remains high and the source(s) of silica have been stopped.
