    How to move an eel?

I am looking to take my snowflake with me to college... Is this too much or can this be done? Should I ship it or just take it myself? I am very nervous as to leaving it at home (nobody likes it but me), and bringing it (will it die?)... Since I'll have to cycle the tank again, where will it go until the time comes.. I'm so confused!
    Thanx

    Moving an eel

Is it the only thing living in the tank at home, or are there other inhabitants you intend to leave behind in your parents care?

Just trying to figure out if you have an option to move the whole system. If not, I would think you'd need to leave the eel behind long enough for you to cycle a new tank, and then have the eel shipped to you, depending on how far away it is that you're moving...how far is it?

I moved your thread from Equipment to the Marine Fish: Care, Health and Disease Treatment forum. You should get more responses here.

Get a good sized Igloo Cooler. Put your tanks water in there, get a air bubbler, battery operated one. Is it possible to set up other tank in advance of you getting there with the eel? Again, use your tank water to throw into the tank to help with its cycle. Possibly take some rock and sand with you. Set-up in advance, or take as much water as possible in a couple Igloo Coolers and use bubblers to keep water oxygenated. You should be good to go. Use the lid, as the eel will try and get out. But drill a hole in the lid to accomodate the air line.

    Lorraine,

Much depends upon how far the move is. You don't mention how long it takes to drive to the new place. Is the system something you can take with you? or do you need to re-establish a new one?

You can start a new system at school, but it may take a couple of months for the system to cycle and stabilize to be suitable for the Eel. Maybe that time wouldn't be too long to leave it behind in the care of another.

Anyway, more info is needed before any sound suggestions can be made. But the two basic choices is taking the system with you or starting a new system at college.

Thank you for the advice everyone... I would need to fly out of state, which is why I am asking this question. I could rustle something up for my snowflake if I was driving, but I'm not...

I'm sure the airlines would allow it in the Cargo hold with the other live animals, and as long as you packaged it appropriately, it would be no worse for wear than if you were to ship it.

The problem is, you need to have a tank ready for him on the other side, and that could take up to a couple months as Lee mentioned.
You could probably contact the local fish stores in that area and tell them what you're trying to do. Someone may have a ready to go system they'd like to sell you, and they may even provide services to help you set it up, but I'm sure that's an expensive option.
