    Question lunar wrasse seems immune to infection

    hi lee,

    I have a lunar wrasse that survives while all other fish in my 24 gal hospital tank died, ich, brooklynella, and or bacterial infection. I am wondering what I need to do so that this wrasse eventually can go back to the main tank? thank you so much for your help.

    phillip.

    Fish in captivity do survive through a variety of parasites and infections. That survival doesn't mean they are disease free. My own experience with this shows this to be a fundamental truth: Bio - Lee (a.k.a. leebca).

    I don't understand the loss of those fishes -- were they undergoing treatment of some sort? were they just there for observation. There may be circumstances here that I am not aware of which could contribute to giving you the wrong response to your question.

    However, if I had a group of fish in quarantine that died, except for one, then I would begin the quarantine process over again, starting the clock for the 6-week quarantine on the day of the last fish death. After 6 weeks of not displaying I would move the fish to the DT. If however, one of the diseases the other fish died from was from a parasite, then I would treat this last fish for that/those parasites, then start the 6-week QT clock after that treatment was complete.

    hi lee,
    The other fishes had ich and velvet and were treated with "quick cure," and maracyn 2.
    I will try the 6-week QT. If the wrasse does not display any symptoms, should I go ahead and treat him for velvet and ich that the other fishes died from?

    thank you.

    If the fish died during the Quick Cure treatment, I'd say you have definitive proof that the cure didn't work. Treat the remaining fish according to one of the recognized, guaranteed treatment methods IF it was exposed to the tank or fish that had Marine Ich. Start with this post: Curing Fish of Marine Ich

    hi lee,

    thanks for the reference. I did read your posts before going through with the treatments and it has worked in the past. I have monitored cupramine level and followed manufacturer's direction. After that method did not seem to work, I switched to quick cure. I guessed that I must have run into very virulent strains of ich and velvet (there were spots and also velvety appearance.)

    Phillip,

    I really want to help you, but there is information missing from what is true and what appears to be true. Please read through this post closely: Marine Ich - Myths and Facts. If you don't accept or believe anything in that post, there is Internet searchable scientific studies performed, reviewed by peers, and published in scientific journals to support it.

    I. Copper works. So there are some possibilities:
    1) It was not used properly;
    2) The concentration was not controlled;
    3) Contamination occurred during or after treatment (could be anything, like an unsterilized net used to transfer the diseased fishes);
    4) It wasn't Marine Ich; etc.

    II. No other non-prescription product cures Marine Ich, shown by:
    a) Microscopic studies
    b) Controlled, third party investigations;
    c) No published research in scientific journals; and
    d) Including garlic which so many cling to -- I tried testing this. See Bio - Lee (a.k.a. leebca)

    III. There are no super strong, virulent strains of the Marine Ich parasites that can survive a proper copper treatment.

    If II were untrue, it would be on the front pages of Journals and save the hobby and fish industry millions of dollars in fish losses.

    If you're not into any of the above, I can't help you. If you can get into believing the above, either on face value or by doing your own research, or by doing your own search of others' research, then I'd suggest going back to using a copper treatment, following all the guidelines starting with this post: Curing Fish of Marine Ich This time, control all things and watch for errors -- that is -- don't do what was done before. Make sure, though you are dealing with Marine Ich.
