    Seachem ParaGuard

    Can I use Seachem ParaGuard on every new fish I get to treat ICH, marine velvet, Brooklynella, etc.? I was wondering if I could replace it for Cupramine copper, Formalin, Macryn?, and all that. Is it very effective for treating a new fish from the LFS that you aren't sure of whether or not it has parasites, fungi, bacteria..

    I cannot reply with personal experience or knowledge. However I can say this about the product:

    1. I have seen no independent studies done and reviewed by the scientific communitiy to verify the claims the product makes;
    2. I have no verifiable knowledge the product consistantly performs as claimed.
    3. If the product did as it is claimed, it would have been written up in fish journals and periodicals; acclaimed by the fishery industry; acclaimed by hobbyists around the world. Lastly, I would suspect it may have made headlines in newspapers. I have seen no such publications on this product.

    On the other hand, Cupramine and other copper products have all three of the above with regards to Marine Ich and Marine Velvet.

    Re: Seachem ParaGuard

    Do you use Seachem's Cupramine? They put up some chart saying Cupramine will kill parasites. but Seachem Paraguard is the only one that kills viral, +parasites, fungal, bacterial. Should I just use both of them in the QT when I get a new fish? btw, I can't find Formalin anywhere!

    Also, What medications do you use when you get a new coral? How do you use it? When do you use it? during Drip acclimating?

    As for the med's for fish, I am just going to get Cupramine and ParaGuard(to test).

    Can't help you with regards to corals and the non-mobile inverts. Someone in the Reef Forum should know more about the quarantine of invertebrates. I know there are dips to prevent certain infestations, but I don't know much about them. Some respected people recommend the quarantine of immobile invertebrates for the pests and pathogens they carry. I recommend their quarantine only to prevent infecting fishes, but there are more reasons for their quarantine.

    Formalin is hard to acquire. Some places that sell ponds and pond life carry it. Some sources may be found on the Internet. However, there are diluted formalin products available to the hobbyist. You just have to use the proper amount of the diluted ones to attain the right, final concentration.
