    Firefish quarantine unnecessary?

    im getting some fish and 2 fire fish from liveaquaria and i was wondering if i need to quarantine firefish? i ordered like 3 fish + the fire fish and i can't fit them all in the quarantine tank! just reading around, idk if this is reliable but..
    Is it necessary to quarantine Firefish?
    <Generally no... too timid, likely to suffer more from stress than it's worth... or jump out in the meanwhile...>
    Is it necessary to quarantine any fish that doesn't have scales?
    <Yes>
    <Likely fine... best not kept singly... Bob Fenner>
    this is what i found from some guy named Bob Fenner, he says it isn't necessary to quarantine firefish.. because they don't have scales? so can I just throw the firefish in the main tank? (after acclimation of course)

    If your trying not to get crap in your DT, you had better QT all the fish. Me personally, never QT'd one fish. Its all up to you. Tangs are
    scaleles., and are highly prone to Ich.

    Re: Firefish quarantine unnecessary?

    I have met and spoken with Bob Fenner. Although a respected person in the hobby, I find that he has written many books on subjects he has had no direct experience with. For instance, how many of these fish has Bob Fenner actually kept? Many authors write fish books, but haven't kept more than 2% of the fish they write about, in a home aquarium. This concept of 'what I write about' vs. 'what I have experience with' is covered in the sticky What Size Tank for that Fish. Many authors extrapolate their knowledge and limited experience into a large area of the hobby. Go with those who actually have the direct experience on the topic you have questions about. Check out my bio: Lee's Bio.

    The scalelessness of fish has no bearing on their ability to get parasites or diseases. Those parasites and diseases may be different according to the fish's ability to ward them off. In the case of Marine Ich, scaleless ornamental marine fishes are subject to attack by the MI parasite.

    All ornamental marine fishes should be quarantined to keep unwanted parasites and diseases out of the display system AND for the entire list of other reasons given in the quarantine post. There are more than 11 reasons to quarantine ornamental marine fishes -- disease and parasites are just a couple of them.

    I'd like you to enjoy the hobby and have success with the minimal of marine life loss and waste. Quarantine!

    oh wow! you just reminded me of what my dad told me, he used to have a 500 gallon reef at his office. he never quarantined fish during his 10 years of reef keeping. only fish to get white spot were tangs, tangs, and of course tangs. no other fish in his tank got ich so he didnt find it important to quarantine (before putting them in the tank). he didnt have a uv sterilizer, nor a 6 foot tall protein skimmer, nothing like that.
    basically, ICH never got a chance to spread in his tank. hmm..

    Its a flip of a coin. Not saying my fish didn't get Ich, they did. I lost a couple, but thats a risk you take by not QTing them. I preferred not to QT.

    LA, I think it's a mistake not to quarantine. There is more to consider than just marine ich. If marine ich is the only thing you want to keep out of your system, then do the quarantine.Fish in the system all get infected by marine ich, even when you don't see it. Wild caught fishes sometimes have marine ich, even when they don't show it.
