Tridacnidae clams

Don't you need like 3-5 watts per gallon of Metal halid lights to keep Tridacidae's maxima clams? The other day I was in an aquarium shop and he was just useing flourescent lights. The clams looked like they were wasting away but he said they were fine and the lighting was adaquite.
I just wanted to doubel check before I order my light ( I'm geting 560W compact flourecent/ metal halid's for a 75 gallon tank)...you do need metal halid's to keep SPS and the Tridacnidae clams, right?

Re: Tridacnidae clams

Metal Halide are definitely recommended for clams and SPS. Although people have been successful using T-5's.

Yes, you too will learn that that person doesn't really know too much.

Scott is correct, and I would also suggest halides for clams. SPS may be turning to be a different story, as alot of folks are having good success with T5 fixtures.

Re: Tridacnidae clams

You ought to check out Poseidon's reef shots. He runs under four overdriven T-5's and an extra T-5 just for the dusk to daylight light. Very nice indeed.

But as most would agree, the MH lights would be better...but it can be done.

Oh crap...am I even allowed in here? LOL If not...sorrrryyyy! :-O LOL

Re: Tridacnidae clams

I have to chime in here! I have three crocea clams under vho t5s that are doing great on the sandbed. The place I bought them from uses halides and vho t5s, mostly vho t5s, and I have kept them for nearly six months without any problems. (knock on wood)!
