I have(or can get) any program that someone needs. For hosting I have my bresnan account and I also have a computer set up to be a decitated web server with my 15mb/1mb connection. BTW I fix computers....

I am not gonna ask how you do that.

Just exactly how much can you throw on a site, say picturewise? If everybody would agree to put a pic of their tank on there, it could take up a little space, couldn't it?

That makes a pretty good Server. now a days there are so many different programs to do web pages that almost anyone can do it, but hosting is a completely different story.

If you can and know how the group owes you big time.

most computers are only capable of displaying a very small portion of what the cameras now a days can do. So a good picture to display on a website normally only runs at most 200k, lots of them fit on say 2 meg

I know that most of the pics that are in my gallery at Reefland are around 200kb, and that is a good size for viewing. Coming out of my Canon, they are sometimes over 1 mb.

well my computer(gateway m275) doesnt charge... and the cords been replaced .. I'm about a month away from just tearing it apart myself to get it to charge... forced me to go out and get my newest laptop..( Toshiba x205-s9349) Ive heard the power supply is a common problem with tablet p/cs.. can you fix it? it's got to be the internal powersupply connection.

Ya and so long as you haven't been as dumb as I was and bought a new computer with Vista, then XP has a great photo resizer that makes it alot easier to make a great small file.

Take a look here, we bought Riley a web name and have it hosted off site. Her site is pretty high res when we started and have used about 1/10 of what we purchased.

she has a alot of her papers on here and we haven't come even close to using her max.

So I would say for 1gig space the club could have a huge, informational, community pictorial

Whatever you do, don't take it to Best Buy, they charge an arm and a leg. we had laptop with the same problem and $300 later, it got fixed. It was the connection on the laptop Kyle, so it was all internal.

I tend to try not to open up laptops. On my server at home I can host probly around 20-40gigs. But I would want to limit the size of pictures. I can build the site I would just perefer if someone else could build it. Domain names are faily cheap, less then $20 a year last time I got one. With my connection I would be willing to host reef related videos(diy tank or show offs).

I'd be happy to build the website for you guys. I'm a pro photographer and website designer. I know I'm not part of your club or anything, but I'd still be more than happy to help out.

I would just need to discuss with the "powers that be" (even if that's here or in a separate thread or whatever) on what you would want to include and what type of pages you would want and what logos you have that you want to use, what colors you're preferable to, yada, yada, yada...

Anyway...just thought I'd throw that into the mix. Totally up to all of you and my feelings won't be hurt at all if you guys stayed in house with it. I just thought I'd offer.

Once designed and approved, I could then just send the appropriate files (and subfolders to be used) to whomever is going to host it so they can upload it for you guys/girls.

OK, I tell you what, let's discuss this thing when we have our meeting on the 22nd, and see what comes out of that. I am all for it.

Mat, this just means that I might have to get hold of you when we get to Vegas, and we could discuss things face to face, and I could get a better understanding. It sounds like everybody wants to give this a go. I really wish more folks would chime in here, that is why I think we should wait until the meeting, and go from there. If this is going to cost us a little, I would like to get the community to totally agree, and maybe get some donations for Mat and Jerry, so if they have any expenses, we could maybe cover them. Am I off base here?

Jerry, what size pics are good for the website? I do have Photoshop, and we can get them to the size you need fairly easy.

Ok! OK! I'm chiming in about the website for the all new Flathead Valley Reef Club since I am almost an official member. I am all for having a website and having someone put it together who knows what they are doing. I agree that we need to talk in March about what we will try to accomplish with it and what kind of costs we are talking about. Will there be an ongoing cost for someone to host it for us or is there someone in the group that can/will do it for free? Let's get 'er done!

It wont cost anything for me to host the server(but I wouldn't be against frag donations). The only problem that I have ran into is that I think I need a new hard drive for the server(something small 10gigs plus). If I can dig up my old laptop I can pull the drive off that.
