I would put enough to cover the bottom of the reactor 1/4" deep and see how many days that lasts. If it's too short of time you can add more. I don't like to fill mine more than once a week. It's kind of a PITA

Kevin

Hey, well at least you have an external stirrer on this one.
I appreciate your help man!!

thanks for all the info Kevin.
what happens if you put to much Kalk in the reactor?? will it turn to cement or not mix or what? assume i have a pump for a stirrer not a magnet.....
Hi Rob,what happens if you put to much Kalk in the reactor??
I suppose it is possible to clog the intake of the mixing pump but you would likely have to bury the pump in kalkwasserIf you put over 1/2" in a magnetic type the stirrer will not start up. I always run the stirrer manually as I add new kalk.

Kevin
PS: Once every 90 days or so you will need to check the end of the tubing as it enters the skimmer or contacts air as you can develop hardening of the kalk enough to block the flow and burst the reactor (it will start to leak from the lid first unless you take a pair of 24" channel locks and tighten the lid really well![]()

sounds like a bad experience to me....
If you have ever seen him with the 24" channel locks Rob, yes it is. It helps if you are laughing at the time tho!!!!!![]()

For sure.....You know it's going to be a bad day when you pull up and water is coming out the front doorsounds like a bad experience to me....![]()

Had that happen at the clinic once, but was a mundane source of water, just a broken washing machine hose. Same nasty result. For sure.....You know it's going to be a bad day when you pull up and water is coming out the front door![]()

hey Kevin,
one more dumb question.... i would like to avoid using a pump for Kalk ATO. i've heard about using your RO/DI to fill the Kalk direct. how do you do that so that your RO can fill a storage tank and pressurize the ATO?
i have a float valve in my storage tank. i understand how a selenoid would work IF the storage tank was full, but how can it work if the storage tank is still filling? do thay sell a 3-way selenoid or something like that?
Hi Rob,
I run 2 - 160gal storage tanks and 2 top-off systems with my 2 RO/DI units. There is a solenoid just before the kalk reactors and float switches in the storage tanks. One of the storage tanks is usually filling but there is still enough pressure to run the top-off 50' away. It might top-off a bit slower but as long as it is dripping fast you're not going to evaporate faster than that. You will need some way to stir the kalk though unless you want to manually do it twice a day. I use the magnetic stirrers with a longer stir bar than comes with it.
Cheers,
Kevin
PS: Be sure to have an in line shutoff valve just before the solenoid closed down to a fast drip for a safety in case the switch gets stuck for some reason.

thanks Kevin. my RO unit is just hooked to well water and has fairly low pressure. i've never invested in a booster pump and it seems to work so i don't have plans to get one.
so you have a solenoid before your Kalk and a float switch on your RO storage tank. do you use a booster pump? but you're on city water aren't you? (higher pressure than well water)
i know it will work for me if my RO tank is full but if it's still filling i am worried that the ATO won't get any water????
do they make a 3-way solenoid so that when the ATO needs water it will switch the flow to the Kalk and when the sump is full the solenoid will switch the flow back to the RO tank? or do they make solenoids that are either open when activated or closed when activated. then i could get one of each and the problem would be solved????
or am i overthinking this as usual???? keep your mouth shut Charlie!!!
do you sell solenoid switches?
thanks

Hi Rob,
What is your well pump pressure? RO membranes do best with at least 40psi. At that pressure you won't have any problems filling several storage and ATO's combined at distances of 50'+. The store has 58PSI. If you have water flowing throughout your house then there is no reason to believe that it wouldn't make it to your tankunless your RO GPD rate is too low. What is the GPD rating of your RO?
Yes I have the solenoid switches.

Kevin
