Feature or Change Requests

As I begin to think about features and changes that I am going to make in the Personal Online Aquarium log, I would like to solicit your feedback on what types of features or changes you would like to see made that will make the log more useful to you. Here are some of the things that are already on my list.

Major Additions
  1. Ability to add more than 1 tank to the log per user. - Will not be completed for the version 2 release as the release would be significantly delayed. Will continue to work on the addition of this feature and release as soon as it is available.
  2. Upload pictures directly to the log instead of using the gallery.
  3. More robust reminder system that will allow user to view upcoming reminders via their log.
  4. Interactive Log. Anyone who makes their log publicly viewable will have their own personal forum available within their log for any registered member to post comments or questions.
  5. Integrate Aquarium Log with rest of site.
  6. Ability to track Aquarium Log activity in Who's Online.
  7. Ability to download log into .txt format.
  8. Registered members have the ability to sign-up for e-mail updates when another users public log is updated.
Major Changes
  1. Change how the lighting maintenance is structured to be more useful. specifically being able to add multiple ballast types and multiple bulb types with individual control over each.
  2. Changes to the Reminder Notifications E-mail system.
  3. Change the format of the User CP to make initial configuration and modifications easier to navigate.
  4. Update all equipment listings to include currently available equipment.
  5. Ability to format comments posted with BB Code and Smilies. All comments entered use the enhanced text editor.
  6. Ability to mark whether livestock is active or not. This would be used when livestock is no longer in your care.
  7. Tracking generations of coral would be pretty neat. # of times fragged, approx. frag growth rates, etc. Even cooler would be a way to link one member's mother colony to another's frag. Then you could correlate coral health and growth rates with chemistry, lighting, and flow rates. - This will be added to an inclusion list for a future version.
Minor Additions
  1. Dynamically create search links for all livestock additions into the log. This will give the user 1 click access to information posted on the forums and pictures posted in the gallery for the addition they made.
  2. Cosmetic changes throughout the log. Can consolidate some pages and come closer to the forum layout.
  3. Include charts for all test types and make chart a little more "flashy".
  4. Add General Tank Maintenance to the available list. Should be an option for all logs.
  5. Add RO/DI unit maintenance to the available list. Should include the ability to enter TDS readings and cartridge changes.
  6. Links that direct to maintenance guidelines or tips.
  7. Ability to perform maintenance on general flow devices like powerheads. Can add this under General Tank Maintenance.
  8. Ability to perform maintenance on fluidized reactors.
Minor Changes
  1. Better number formatting for charts. Currently the chart functions are very basic.
  2. Better date formatting for reminders. Currently date options are not formatted.
  3. Edit test results should show the correct decimal places, currently shows table default of 0.0000.
  4. Ability to sort list of publicly viewable logs by column headings.
If you have anything you would like to see in version 2, please post them here for discussion and possible inclusion. Don't miss the chance to make the log easier for you to use!!!

Red = Completed
Blue = Edited, see notes.

Hello Scott, Just joined your site and seems to be a great group to join. I have played around with the Maintance Log and it seems to be great.

A couple of thinks that might make things easeir exspecially for me is add livestock more than one at a time.
And I seem to forget when I added supplements to my tank (ex..Zoe, Essental Vitiams). If there could be a field you could manually add in your own header to keep track of?? Ex. Dose with Zoe...

Thanks again, And keep up the Good Work!

Thumbs up

Can you add an aquarium maker to your list??

There is one here on the coast that i bought my tank from, who also supplies
tanks for this area..the name of the company is Ocean View Aquarium Products
Inc.

thanks! I really like the additions you are adding to version 2. Especailly
the multi tank and multi ballast, type addition. When will this new
version be available?

Sailfin,

I am considering how to go about this. I will tag this as a possibility.

Shells,

Yup, I will add it to version 2. I do not have an estimate on when the new version will be completed. I will say that I have been working diligently on it for a couple of days though. Not a lot done but I have started on it.

Hey,

Just wanted to say that the Aquarium Log is a really great program. I think you have started something that is very useful not only for the novice aquarist, but the advanced as well.

Anyway, I was thinking of coming up with a program like this, but didn't have the time (nor skills) to do so. So, here are a couple of thoughts that you might consider:

1) Have a graph for all tests. (Currently, only a couple of tests have graphs, at least that I know of...)

2) Have a way for the user to modify graphs. (Right now, I think the salinity graphs rounds to the second decimal place, but was hoping for at least 3 or 4 decimal places...)

3) Have a way for the graphs to incorporate the fish/invert and log notes/diary entries somehow. I think this would be a really great feature. Specifically, I think if the user can see how a test, such as pH, behaves, and then have some sort of marker for a diary entry (or invert entry) on the chart, the user would be able to see how entries affect the tests. I think this would be really helpful for the user to see why certain chemicals behave as the ecosystem changes...

Anyway, these are just thoughts. The aquarium log is really great, and I look forward to the changes that you are currently making =)

Thanks again for offering this great program!

Jon

Hi Jon, Welcome to Reefland!

Thanks for the feedback! I'll add these to my offline to-think-about list and see what I can come up with.

Hey Scott!
I just had an idea, dont know if anyone has mentioned it before,,
under each type maintence option, have a tip breifly explaining an example
and time frame for each type maintence.
For example, calcium reactor maintence, briefly explain whats involved in
the maintance, and how often it needs to be done. How often do you
replace the media, refill the C02?
This feature what greatly help folks like me who have never had the specific
item before.
The light maintence, depending on type bulb/ballast, the estimated life of
the bulbs/ballasts. is there cleaning maintence for bulbs/ballasts?
Whats involved in the sump maintence (first time for having one for me)?

thanks
Shellie

I just finished scraping the coralline off the glass on the 300. Way too much fun :slap: . I was thinking that maybe we could add a general maintenance that would cover stuff like this. Just a thought!

Scott, are we gonna have to re-enter everything, or can you incorporate that into version 2?

Oh no, everything will be retained. Might see an oddity here and there with dates or something minor but everything will be retained.

Which reminds me, need to add a way to download all information from the aquarium log if needed. Adding it to my to-do list now.
