Oh no, im wanting a new camera, help!!

Well after much thinking (about a 10min look at nikons web site ) i have decided i would like to upgrade from my nikon coolpics 8700 to a DSLR of some kind, im not to sure what one yet but i like the look of the D50 and D70.
Can anyone advise me on a good DSLR for about £350 or $687 as the market now stands!

thanks, james.

James, I don't follow Nikon much, but I do know that I would stay away from the Nikon D40. The D50 seems to be a reasonable camera for the money, and the D70 seems to have a better build, from what I read anyway. Aside from a quick hold of each at Circuit City, I have no real experience with either. I do however have a strong affection for Canon, and I believe them the be superior to Nikon, even if you compare models with fewer Megapixels. Canon's Rebel XT or even the XTi will be very close to the price you are looking at, and I am certain they will outperform the Nikon, especially in high ISO pictures.

Mike, I wonder why you feel so strongly about the D40 model? I thought aside from the lack AF drive pin it was a superior body to the one of D50?

I have a problem with a Manufacturer that purposely limits consumers to purchase ONLY certain types of lenses. Even though I don't use third party glass, I may like to have that option at some point. The way I understand the D40, if you don't use Nikon Af-s glass, you don't get to use auto focus.

I am sure the D40 has its place, but I don't find the trade off in cost vs features effective.
