Re: I went to the skate park!
Pretty good overall James! The second image is by the best in my opinion. Somethings to remember, FACES are the difference between an OK picture and a good one. Faces and a sense of motion make a better picture. Faces, sense of motion, and a tight crop make the best picture.
If you can seperate your subject from the background using a small aperture, and still get all three of the above, then you are really rocking! Keep up the effort, and have fun! Also, like you see here, sometimes you have to be "in harms way" to get the best shot, a lot of times that means very close to the action..... |

Quote:
mike when you say sense of motion what do you mean, a motion blur? would you say any of these pics have a sense of motion? i know what you mean about trying to get the face in when i got back i realised that not many of the pics it took did have them in! As for the tight crop i wasnt sure about that, because i wanted to show how high they were off the ramps! Quote:

Re: I went to the skate park!
LOL! That is a good expression, of course it looks like his ankle is quite "tweaked" so I am sure my face would be contorted too!
This image looks bad because of the file size, but to give you an idea of what a crop could do.... You still get a sense of height, and the subject is more clearly defined... |

HAHA!
Thanks for the advice mike, its crazy how something as simple as a crop and a face make a shot so much better! Cheers james ![]()

Re: I went to the skate park!
No problem James, glad I could help.
Here is one other tidbit for you, and this one is TOUGH! Most of your shots are backlit, which is cool, but it makes the faces dark. If you have an external speedlight, you can set the camera to manual, expose for the background, then put the speedlight on E-TTL and it will fire the correct amount to fill the subject. Either that, or you have to move the SUN! ![]() Do you by chance have Photoshop CS2? There is a tool in there that is called "Shadow/Highlight" and it really helps with the dark faces.... |

Re: I went to the skate park!
Yes, it is loads more powerful! I think the functions are similar, but CS2 has the ability to run batches, and it has the shadow highlight tool etc...
Put it on! I am sure it will take some getting used too, but it is certainly worth it. |

Ya, you have to use it in moderation.... I find anything more then 25% looks lousy.... (there are exceptions of course.)

Re: I went to the skate park!
Those are fun!
I would really like to see those backflip shots from a different angle though. Maybe from the take off ramp shooting from Ramp level up at them, with the ramp and then a face upside down looking back towards the camera.... |
