I'll give that a shot tomorrow Gene. Thanks for the tips!

I do, our hood is actually hanging from chains and can be raised. Next time I do some maintenance (this weekend) I'll try a few before I get started.

Re: Photo Training

I suspect that you will need to use ISO 400 for the fish pictures, and using Shutter priority like Gene suggests will work well. You need a shutter speed of at least 1/125 or else the fish is going to be blurry....

Re: Photo Training

Ok, I'll give that a try tonight or tomorrow. I sure appreciate the help though Mike, it was great having someone walk me through it. My pictures sure look better too.

Mike,

Having shot with Nikons before I think shots with ISO 400 may end up too noisy. Could be fixed, of course, but I;m not sure if Scott has any of the noise reducing softwares, like Noise Ninja or some other.

Scott, you can experiment with different shutter speeds and ISO and see which combo produce the best results in your situation (lights, etc.). I think you asked in one of your previous posts about lights in the room. In my experience it is best to turn all of the lights off except the aquarium. If you have windows draw curtains tight as well... have a drink and start shooting.

Re: Photo Training

I asked earlier about the built in Noise Reduction feature of the camera. Should I use this for all pictures?

Scott, I can;t really tell you if it works or not judging from the pics you posted because they are reduced in size. I would try using it and see how it works for all my shots, it can't be all that bad.
Try with and without and do a 100% crops on all of the shots you take, it should tell you if it really works or not. I mean to say that for higher ISO numbers it may be useful option.

Re: Photo Training

Ok, anything taken with a high ISO is extremely noisy. I tried 400 and 200.

Scott, I remember the same thing happening when I was using my old coolpix but I thought they tackled this problem with later versions, like your camera for example. I can say with certainty that Canon's gear is much nicer in that regard...anyways, there got to be a way to take cleaner shots of the fish. Can you try shooting in shutter priority with 1/125 setting and ISO 100? Take a note what f number the camera is defaulting with that shutter speed. It may help if you decide to switch to manual. Take couple of shots and see how fast the shutter is released and if you can handhold the camera with that speed. Oh, and please post some samples so we can see the results.

PS> Do you have full version of this picture?

If yes, can you email it to me? I would like to look at it in PS SC2 and see what it looks like at full size. It is a nice picture, albeit slightly overexposed on the highlights( this could be fixed in SC2).
