Rainforest Cafe's aquarium

We took our granddaughter to the 'Rainforest Cafe' that's located in one of our large Shopping Malls. They have couple of large aquariums.., one is a huge Ark shaped acrylic fare that house many, many fish that are able to swim from one tube to another. Anyways, inside the cafe they have another FO aquarium that must be about 700g in size. I took few pictures that I want to share with you.
To be fair, I couldn't really take decent pics because people are sitting right up to it and I couldn't ask them to move as you understand.
Shooting at an angle to the acrylic produces marginal at best results but I digress...

I also couldn't count all of the fish, or the number of species present because sheer number of them makes it that much harder to concentrate( and couple of beers that I had prior... )

Anyway, here goes nothing...
A side shot of the tank taken from the table I was sitting at.

And sort of frontal view but actually not.., the best I could do at the time.

and a few random shots of the inhabitants...

This guy looks like a reef safe addition...

and I don't have to tell you about this one either...

Despite the sheer number of species and sizes of the fish I haven't noticed any bickering or fighting. The fish just cruised around the tank.

I need to talk to the management to allow me to come in before they open so I can take some better images of it. If I succeed I will post them here.

Re: Rainforest Cafe's aquarium

I think you did very well Gene! What location is that, my best friend just started working at the RFC near us, and their tanks are no where near that successful! Alot of the fish have HLLE, and some sort of internal parasite that makes them bloated.... Matt will help get things better I am sure, but maybe the management of this location can share what they have done with the management of the one at Great Lakes Crossing Mall....

Re: Rainforest Cafe's aquarium

Mike,

The restaurant located in the Menlo Park Mall, Edison, NJ.
To be honest, every time I visit there( not very often) the fish looks very healthy. Having said that, there is no way of telling if fish dies and is replaced quickly or it is simply an attribute to the keeper and fish lives long time.

Hopefully I can find out who managing this place and have a talk with him/her to get the details (and more pictures, of course... )

More pics and maybe a little history perhaps Gene.
I forget what hotel Lorie and I were in, in Las Vegas, but they have a huge fish only tank behind the check-in desk. We must have spent 45 minutes watching and listening. The listening was the fun part.

Re: Rainforest Cafe's aquarium

Thanks Gene! I'll let Matt know the location of this one, because the fish look MUCH BETTER there, then they do here.

Good luck getting with the manager, I don't see why he wouldn't let you take pictures, especially if you take some of these in with you!

Re: Rainforest Cafe's aquarium

Charlie, those are the only pics I have of the tank. I have others where you can see some of it but those pictures are of my granddaughter, so I won't be posting them...

The tank is roughly, and I reiterate roughly word, 8 feet long x 4 feet in height and same in depth. It is a wave shaped aquarium so it has sort of pinch in the middle, but it is still huge to my eye.

This place was build about 4-5 years ago, maybe more? I can;t remember for sure.

I know what you mean, Scott. If I remember correctly they have one or two of those in that tank.
I had a powder blue as part of my first two fishes that I bought for my 110g tank in 98. It was a magnificent fish to watch... I lost him to Marine Ich after I "smartly" decided to introduce another two tangs that were at least 4 inches in size... I still remember and still feel soo stupid for doing it.., but I didn;t know any better then.

Re: Rainforest Cafe's aquarium

We had one in the past as well and it was doing well until that nasty red algae outbreak. I seriously think that we will get another one and it will be our main fish attraction for the tank. Right now we only have the flamehawk so I think we will add a Powder Blue eventually (next) and then maybe a small clwon pair, or other similarly behaved small fish and that will be it for fish.

If we don't get the Powder Blue we might go with a Chevron Tang, although I think the Powder Blue is more financially feasible.

Re: Rainforest Cafe's aquarium

I love my Powder Blue. I can watch it for hours as it swim around the tank. You really never know just how beautiful one is until it is in your tank.

We sat next to that tank down here in Galveston last week. The feeders went off twice while we were there. The fish started gathering around the one spot of the tank. It was a LARGE school of so many different fish. I was wondering what was going on until the food released. Pretty cool how they all knew it was time for the feeder to go off.

We go there maybe once a year if my daughter requests it for her birthday. It's price for the tourists, that's for sure.

VOOOLCAAANOOOOOOO!!!

Re: Rainforest Cafe's aquarium

They are absolutely stunning. We are going to get one, just a matter of time. The Powder Blue will hopefully be the showcase fish of the tank (if it does well).

Re: Rainforest Cafe's aquarium

I am not sure who maintains RFC's aquarium's now, But about ten years ago Living Sea Aquarium's out of Park Ridge (Chicago) IL set up a number of tanks for RFC. I have been out of the hobby for about seven years moved once to often and lost everything. I do remember at first the employees enjoyed traveling around maintaining the tanks, once the travel got old a number of employees quit and Living Sea had to stop maintaining RFC's tanks.
