Re: Trying to put my camera to the test

Hey weez, I have been using my Canon 28-135 alot lately. All those flower pics I took and posted last Saturday were with that lens. I have to agree with Gene on the 70-200 and the 100mm macro. I just wish I had some more sps to take pics of!!!!

Anything here catch your eye?
Otherwise I'll look elsewhere, but this is usually where I order most of my stuff...

Well your flower shots are really nice so I guess it says alot for the lens, but lets not forget the user

I still stink with this camera thing, I'm only just learning about all this f stop and shutter speed thing since I used to use the camera on auto

Well, thanx for the compliment, I took those before the beer fell out of the bottle.

Weez, I am still learning also, that is why Gene and Mike are here!!!

Louise,

From all the 4 pages the most useful all around lens ( if money is no object) is 24-105mm f4 L lens. Having said that, the 50mm prime lens is probably second best of the bunch
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...0082166&catid=
I'm guessing that the price is in Canadian dollars and not US because 129 bucks would be almost double of what it's sells for here.

Re: Trying to put my camera to the test

Hi Gene,
Ok the expensive lens is out of the question because I would prefer not having to go live in a cardboard box in return for better pics

And yes we do tend to get ripped off royally up here, although our dollar is now almost equal (1.00 CAD=0.95 USD compared to 0.58 USD not too long ago) the market value of almost everything is wildly marked up! I was choosing futureshop because they usually offer the best price for most of what they sell.
A recent example is this:
eBay: 1969 MGB GT COUPE MKII GREEN 1:18 AUTOART MODEL (item 150137907006 end time Jul-05-07 15:49:45 PDT)
My husband wanted it because in his younger days he owned that car (he said it was the most fun to drive of all his cars)
We found it in a few places up here and they were all selling for $100 plus TAX = $114.00!!! Even with the shipping it's much cheaper!

Anyways I'm rambling

Maybe I'll check eBay...

Re: Trying to put my camera to the test

eBay.ca: 0.45X WIDE/MACRO LENS -Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT 350D (item 200125648002 end time 08-Jul-07 11:55:39 EDT)

I'm not trying to be cheap but what's that thing all about?

From the looks of it ebay seems to be the way to go but there so much to choose from and I don't know the difference from one to the next.

Learning's a B#&ch eh!

Hi Louise,

To be honest, those are not true macro lenses, instead they are simple diopters that you have to screw into the front end of your existing lens. While some are decent others are real crap... The biggest problem with this diopters is the loss of available light ( you usually loose at least couple of stops) and DOF becomes none existent. I mean you can probably have decent shot of the single polyp on one of your acroporas but the rest of the picture will be blurred/out of focus. If you can, try looking up a 100mm macro lens made by Vivitar (they discontinued making it under their own lable and instead it is now a 90mm Tamron lens ), you can still find them on the Ebay for just over a $100.00. They are cheaply made but the glass is pretty darn good. It's maximum aperture is 3.5 and it's a bit slow on the AF and noisy for my liking but once focised the images are nice. Good color rendition and pretty darn sharp if you can stop it down to f5.6 and beyond... I have one laying around but I removed 1:1 diopter and use it stricktly as a 100mm prime lens for shooting pictures of fish.

Good luck Louise!

PS. Here is a link to that 50mm prime I was talking about earlier, it's like 80 bucks.
Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus Lens

Re: Trying to put my camera to the test

Well after trying out a few afforable lenses at the camera shop I went with a Tamron AF70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD macro 1:2
I'm pretty impressed with it so far but then again being a beginner I would probably be impressed with just about anything!!
The Buddha pic I took from 10 feet away and I like it!
The sun coral is from 4 feet away on the macro setting.
The funniest pic is the baby's breath! I wasn't trying to take that one, I was just sitting 4 feet away trying to compose my shot of something else and clicked by accident! I know it's blurry but it looks pretty nice for an accident!
Any thoughts?
I'm really open for criticism :slap:

Can't comment on the pictures but that sun coral looks really happy.

Re: Trying to put my camera to the test

Oops, I almost forgot,
I was going to ask for some help. Next week we're going to the first Canadian NASCAR event (Busch Series) and I was going to bring along the camera. What would be the best setting for cars zipping by at a million miles an hour?

Make sure you put it in the sports mode. I screwed up when I caught the cup race in Vegas this year. I think Mike got me on that one!!!! Enjoy the race, you'll have a ton of fun, believe me.

Re: Trying to put my camera to the test

Does the ISO set itself in sports mode or should I set it myself?

Not to drag back a week old thread, but weez, I can't wait to see your pics from the race. Watched the whole thing myself, quite the ending, huh?

Re: Trying to put my camera to the test

It was insane!:slap:
So much crashing in the last few laps! That Ambrose/Gordon feud was getting pretty crazy!

Anyways, the pictures, I guess I'm gonna have to practice that a little more We were in a pretty good spot so I was able to get some close shots but they all look like still shots, in that first shot the car is actually flying by! I was hoping for some motion blur

My husband got to exchange "hey, how's it goin' " with Boris Said, so that made his day but I think the girls might have done that too! Boris looked sort of lost on the Island but that's kinda normal, we were lost most of the time too!

Re: Trying to put my camera to the test

Hubby's not gonna forget the Bud gals, is he?

Those look prety darn good gal!!!! Love the flames on the 38 car!!!!!!

Lorie got Boris's autograph during speed weeks @ Daytona this year, she said he is a pretty down to earth kind of guy. Did you use the sports mode?

I hope you really enjoyed the race, maybe next time you'll have to come over for an oval race, they are a hoot too. Heck, come on down to Vegas next March, we are gonna be at one of the parking lots around the track, so the party starts about Thursday nite!!!!

me too! I was happy to see that one turn out so good!

We tried to get to where the drivers were but the track was too big, there were no pitt passes (according to the people we got the tickets from...

Did you use the sports mode?

Yes I did, the shutter speed on most of the pics was about 1000. So how do I get motion blur?

Sounds like fun but we'll probably start with one off the closer tracks first, New York, New Hampshire etc. Besides my Husband is allergic to Vegas
He went to the Casino last year with our kids (the casino is right in the middle of the Gilles Villeneuve race track) and put down a $20 at one of the tables and he said it was just like in the movie "Mafia" with Christina Applegate. If you didn't see it, they say you may as well just put your money in an envelope and mail it to them!

I'm glad I wasn't there, he's such a sore loser when there's $$ involved

I would assume you might have to go to a manual setting, and slow the speed down a bit. Geez, I wish Mike would chime in here.
