They make an excellent addition to any reeftank but they are not the only snails that you would need for your tank. You would also want some algae eating snails such as Trochus spp.
Here is a good article by Dr. Ron Shimek on Nassarius spp. snails: http://www.animalnetwork.com/fish/li...=&RecordNo=166 Grazing Snails by Ron Shimek: http://www.reefs.org/library/aquariu...ers/index.html You will have to click on Without a Backbone in the left hand column and then choose the two articles by Ron Shimek on Grazing Snails.

Nassarius snails are best at keeping the sandbed clean/stirred. They often bury themselves in my tank but emerge when there is food available. They will occassionally climb on the LR or glass but are not well suited to this since they often fall off of the glass for no apparent reason. In addition to Nassarius (25-30), I have Astrea(25-30), Cerith(15 +/-), and a few other individual specimens in my 90g reef. With snail, there is no single "one size fits all" needs.

Nassarius snails are best thought of as more of a scavenger IMHO. They do a GREAT job with keeping the upper layers of the sand bed stirred. Like Virginia Reef said, a variety of different snails would probably be more beneficial to the tank.
These are the snails I have in my tank: 30-35 Nassarius 10 Stomatella varia 5 Cerith 1 Fighting Conch 1 Astrea (I've had it since the tank started!) 10 Mexican Turbos I am getting rid of the Mexican Turbos in favor of more Stomatella varia. The mexicans tend to get LARGE rather quickly and seem to delight in knocking loose corals from my rock. They do however do an amazing job of keeping algae in check. HTH! |
