Marty,
I never thought of doing that. I would certainly look very closely at the guts of the machine. Make sure there is no copper tubing involved in the process.
Just my $.02

The evaporation coil is made out of aluminum tubing. Does anyone know if aluminum is inert?

Just sounds like a bad idea to me. Who knows what all will end up in the water.

i was going to do this but then i thought. all that dust and weird stuff floating in the air would get trapped to evaporated water. then end up in the machine. and i dont know about yours but mine has all copper coils witch gave me enough reason not to try it.
