Why is it dwindling?
Anyway,I think cerith and true nassarious are very good and I think Stomatella varia reproducing in tanks really well,atleast in my tank they do. I only started with one that came as a free rider on some new rock and now I have many. I got rid of all the hermits I could catch and my snails population rebounded,FWIW.
I don't care if they look cute and all but I watched two of the hirmits flipping a small turbo and killing the snail for the shell. In the sump they went

I've been a victim of E-bay Nassarious IO snails for 24.99 so avoid those for sure!!!! they are not the ones we would really PREFER for our money they haven't done any harm but by the same token I did not get what I thought I was getting!!

I've also purchased snails from www.garf.org and I was given exactly what I was told I was ordering and they sold them to me for 1.00 ea!!

I've been to a few LFS and purchased Astrea Snails for like 15.-17.00 per dozen, Trochus are about 2-3 bux apiece both are great to keep the glasss clean but the astrea can not right themselves if they flip over, thats when my hermits jump on them and have dinner!!!

Well,I know what dwindling means. I simply asked why. Do they die becouse you had them for a long time and they just die or something prey on them? Anyhow,does not matter,poseidon covered your question...

i like hermits..5+ years and ive never witnessed a hermit attacking a snail..i have tons of snails and hermits-maybe im just lucky.

anyway to answer the question..the best cleanup crew imo -is a diverse one.
