Dessimated reef

The power outage of 22 hours has killed my reef!!!

I lost everything except 7 fungia, 2 rose torches, a brain, and my few fish!!!

I am going to call mt insurance company to recoup the estimated 1600.00 in Acropora I just lost!!

I just got several hundred pounds of live rock for a new frag system! ( SUE the Echinata and Solitarynesis will be coning to you free) and 30 colonies!!

I am so dispounded I cannot see straight at this point. I do know that 1600 fopr a generator is happening soon!!

Oh no ... very sorry to hear this. I had a feeling there would be some in the outage zones that lost some stuff, let alone all of their stuff. I hope you are able to build it back up again. Again, that is terrible news.

Hy heart goes out to you bro. Did you not have one of those battery powered air pumps or do they just not help much? At any rate, I hate to hear about a crash.
Keep the Faith,
Augustus

Mike,

So sorry about your loss. What model generator are you planning on getting? We just purchased a Generac 7000w (12,250 surge watts) from Home Depot for $1099 plus $275 to the electrician for installation. They had some nice looking 5500w models for only about $650. At first my brother-in-law wanted a 10,000w model, but they were $2000 and had to be special ordered so he decided on the 7000w model as a compromise. Even the 10,000w model would not have run the central A/C.

Good luck with your re-start project.

I am planning on a unit that will run the pump so something close to yours will suffice. Many of the reefers I know here lostat least 50% or more!

We are luckily having some frag swaps soon and I should be up and running to help repopulate the reefs of the balckout state!

This is terribile news and I'm very sorry to hear this happened to you
Luckily we weren't affected at all, maybe 15-20 min. max. but NY got it bad and some areas didn't get power back untill 7 this morning.I hate to think what could've happened to folks that did not have a back up.
I'm getting one of those,Ninong!

Tahks for the kind words.

Like I said a number of us lost a lot! some of my buddies used inverters and ran things from there cars.

I will need a generator because I am going to have 2-5 hundred frags at any time very soon. I am happy that I delayed some rare acropora from Australia and Bali this week. Its weird but I was not going to be able to get them from the airport D/T other buisness and called to dealy them a week.

Weird how it worked out!

I will be working with other reefers to get a suport network going so we will be prepared for anything like this again. I think at the next swap we will be discussing inverters and battery backups. Also a local calling network for foster care for animals until the home tanks are back on line to avoid these losses

Mike, i'm sorry for what has happened. I know more reefers must have had problems in the North East. Again, i was lucky to be on the West Coast and be in the power outtage. Again condolences and we know your next reef will rock as well!

Well I am moving towrds the dream of complete dedication of time and self to the hobby with the farming efforts. I am planning on 200-500 frags at a time of very wonderful SPS. I figure everyone has a niche and this is mine.

I am licky enough to have connections to get some rare things that are seldom available to us here in the USA.

I plan on putting much of my energy into propogation of these acropora and then making them availble at a reasonalbe cost to my fellow hobbyist.

I am hoping soon to start a greenhouse operation with a fellow reefer I met that lives right down the road from me.

Mrok, I'm from Australia and was interested to read that you were getting some acros from Australia. The export of corals is banned here, so either they are not from Australia, or they are being exported on the black market. Sorry to hear of so many blackout related loses :

Regards gary

I will have to call the wholesaler then because the yare listed under Australia. Unless he is categorizing Bali as Australia D/T proximity? That could be. I will check it out. and get beck to you on it. If it is forbidden then I don't want it.

That would be good mate, very ethical. We have problems with illegal fishing from Indonesian fisherman, but usually they target clams and trochus. I suppose they may have started on corals?? The export of live corals is definately banned though. Unless they were illegally collected, I cant see how your dealer could confuse Bali, a province of Indonesia with Australia. Sounds fishy to me!

Regards Gary.

ANgel...I see the error.

I called and inquired. Somehow the Bali Corals got misprinted. They do carry some Fish from Australia and it seems that is what happened. The heading got transposed. The dealer said that it was a misprint and was correcting it right away. He confirmed that the collection of corals in Australia is forbidden.

Glad to hear that. Yes fish can be exported, but no inverts at all. Hope all goes well with the restocking of your tank.

Regards Gary.

I was gald to hear it to. I think that whatever laws there are on import/export of inverts should be folllowed to the letter. There has to be some ethical barometer in all of this.

Strange and unexpected things happen with a designed purpose it seems like. It's amazing how through most tragedies something good comes out. I can't wait till you post pics of your new set-up your putting together. This red tonga branch rock you posted pictures of looks great. Good luck bud, keep us updated.

My entire tank is aquascaped with that rock. I will be getting the corals for it a week from next Monday. I am going to do many tabletops and stags in the tank. I already have the places for them pretty much picked out if they cooperate and do well there.
