Hi Adam!
Well there is a ton of advice to give but I am going to stick with a couple of things that stick right out at me.
First is your substrate; it appears that you have opted to use some type of large gravel for your bed which can cause problems if not properly maintained. The large gravel allows for waste to accumulate and fall to the bottom of the tank where it will not be processed. The end result of this is a lot of nutrients that you can't get rid of. One option is to frequently clean the substrate but then you are loosing some of the bacteria that is required to process the waste which can lead to a lot of nutrients. You should research and consider removing the gravel and going with a fine sand bed or even a bare bottom tank. Secondly is your anemone. It is going to move around on it's own and there is no way to prevent it; eventually it will find a spot that it likes and "relax". However be mindful that anemones can be hard to keep if not provided the correct environment which includes an esablished aquarium with plenty of light. Lastly I will comment on your rock work. Is this live rock? It appears to be some sort of creek rock which is not a good idea for reef aquariums. You need to stock the tank with a good quality live rock which will help with the filtration by introducing necessary bacteria to the tank. Some searches that may help you out are for: Anemone Live Rock Substrate There will be a lot of threads that you should read to get you going in a better direction. Regards, Scott Z. P.S. I love your little Torch/Frogspawn Coral. ![]() |

I didn't even think to look at your location before I replied; not that it makes any difference.
![]() The large substrate in the bottom is a real concern; not so much now and the immediate future as it is mid-long term. Here are some searches I performed for you that you should look through: http://www.reefland.com/forum/search.php?searchid=2146 http://www.reefland.com/forum/search.php?searchid=2147 The coral here would have cost anywhere between 15-25USD; looks like you got a pretty good deal. :-) For fish, the Ocellaris Clownfish are a perfect choice for your tank however as experienced the Damsel will not play nice. I would suggest getting rid of the Damsel as it will be very difficult to find any tank mates it would be kind too. Another good small fish is the Royal Gramma. ![]() |

wow.... ok if i were to get the fine sand tomorrow.... what should i start off with?
maintain the water in the tank and just take off the gravel? or to cure the sand and stuffs.... then drain off the whole tank.... is it reccomended to scrub the algae off the "live rocks" ? hmm.... damn that damsel.... had no intention of keeping it... just initially to see whether it can survive in my new aquarium... and killing it is more like a waste.... |

![]() Don't run out and get fine sand tomorrow; do some reading and see what options may work better for you. A deep fine sand bed is an option as is a bare bottom. If you go with a sand bed, you should get fine grade (sugar size) sand and it is recommended to be at least 4" deep. There are many options available except leaving the gravel' it should really be removed. Which ever option you choose, you should remove the gravel from teh tank slowly, maybe 1/4th of it a week, stretching it over a 1 month period. This will allow what bacteria is living in the substrate to replenish itself balancing out what you remove. Removing it all at once could cause some kind of mini-cycle so take it slow. Scrubbing algae off of the rocks can mean a lot of different things so you'll have to clarify a little bit for me. If the rock had a lot of macro algae growing on it, yeah it may be best to scrub it off. If your talking about coralline algae and various small life, I would leave it since we're looking for diversity. Perhaps an option for the Damsel is to remove it from the aquarium and return it to the store you bought it from for credit? |
