Is this a Snail???

My Mother in law wanted to bring me back something from Florida as a souvenier (sp?) and decided to catch me 2 Fiddler Crabs and this Snail or Conch....

I have 2 pictures so far it is in a Little 5 gallon tank next to my sump and I wondered if any one had any ideas as to what it is and if it is safe for my reef tank?

heres the first image

Oh no everyone, beware! The picture thief is back again! Protect all of your belongings and lock your doors!

Oh wait, maybe Poseidon just forgot to attach the image.

I must have messed that up too. Don't remove anymore, everyone gets 5MB (except Contributing Members) and you shouldn't be no where near that!

You should be able to upload now Poseidon, sorry about that.

Thanks Scott, I have it worked out now, I think I was over the 5MB, I use a 6.3 megapixel EOS 10D and I need to shoot a smaller image for posting on the boards, I'll try and do that next time...

Mike, I'm no expert on the snails by any means but it looks like some sort of whelk to me. I'll try a google search for whelks and see what I can come up with, then of course I could be totally wrong about the whole thing

PS.How large is this beast?

Hi Mike,

My pleasure FWIW, I did some lookin around on that site but could not find anything that matches exactly.Could you take a clearer shot of it, underside as well. The general appearance of the shell does resemble one of the Strombus, however,I think you'll have a better chance to find a match then I becouse you can look at it LIVE
Once you find a match you can do some more searches as to what their food requirements are using the latin name as key word.Google is great for this or you can always ask Dr.Ron,or our own Ninong (he knows everything )

Hi Mike ,

Got on ID for you,I had contacted Dr.Ron Shimek and used your latest pics for the querry. As I had suspected the first time,it is a whelk... here's what Dr.Ron wrote in his email to me :
Quote:
Dr.Shimek wrote:

The snail is Melongena corona, the crown whelk, and it is a voracious
predator on other snails. It will nicely clean a tank of those pesky
grazing snails that get all over the glass....
PS. Mike, here's a pic for you that I have found using the name that good doctor gave me for a search.
Check it out, especially what it eats(it does include clams)

http://www.jaxshells.org/cor248.htm

My advice would be to either keep it in that 5g tank or dispose of it humainly .

WOW

Gene thanks for the input, I'm glad I left the little guy in that 5 gallon tank till I got the ID!!!

I'm already running a little short on snails, so that guy would have wiped me out in no time I'm sure

The shell sure is cool though!!

I knew I prefered this board for some reason!!!

have a great week!!

Mike

Yeah, I'm glad too that you left him in a separate tank becouse he wouldn't be small for long. Some of them were caught in the size range of about 100mm...eating another Melongena corona whelks
Oh.., I'm sure if you would post this pics in Dr.Rons forum he'd answer your call for help with this, but you're right...this site has sence of community that really appeals to me as well.
