How to Remove Attached Clams?

I was just curious about this after I removed all of our corals and clams when we added the new rock. I reached down to move remove our T. Derasa and it was stuck down (this clam is on the sand bed). I very gently wiggled it and tried to remove it, no go. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how it was stuck down, initially I thought it was just attached to the sand or something. I proceeded to dig my fingers into the sand a bit and felt a small piece of rock that it was attached to and remove it, rock and all.

I placed everything back in the tank today and all is well, the clam is fine but it did spark the question, how do you remove an attached clam if necessary without harming it?

Regards,
Scott Z.

Scott,

The byssal threads can be cut by leaning clam to the side(gently ) and cutting with clean sharp blade as close to the rock as possibile, then repeating proccess from the other side.Just be very careful not to damage its foot, you can easily see the difference between threads and the clams foot when you look under the clam.
Here's couple of pics of the foot. The tissue that is around it is where threads would be.The white stringy stuff
PS. You should repeat the proccess from all sides untill clam is completely loose,do not try to pry it with force in any way, just lean slightly and cut, lean and cut

Thanks for the information and the great pictures Gene, your getting really good with that camera.

Luckily, it appears I did no damage to the clam and it is doing just fine.

Scott, those are not my pics,I wish I could do some nice work like that.

They were sent to me by someone else so I could help this person post them at the clamforum. It just happened that I still had them on my hard drive.I'm glad your clam is OK and I'm sure it will grow BIG for you soon enough being a derasa

Scott,

Gene is a expert with that camera.

Thought I would come over here since I can not access my forum Guess we will be moving everything to a new ISP.

Can't begin to tell you how mad I am .

Scott, glad you were able remove the clam. I also do as Gene does. A lot of times when I have clams on the PVC rings they will attach as well and I just use a scapel to cut the thread and all is well.

Barry

Hi Barry,

I was in the same predicament as you or Scott-no luck in accessing the site yesterday evening or early this morning. I hope it will be resolved soon.
