    Need advice on angelfish..

I was wondering if anyone here has any sucess with keeping angels other than the dwarfs in their reef tanks. I have a tank with both sps and softies, mostly zoos, and have a real desire to get a juv. angel, but fear that I will create more havic than I can deal with.

I've had two Majestic angels in a reef with sps, lps, softies, and clams, and never noticed any nipping or nipped corals/ mantles. I have always fed regularly, though.

I know alot of guys who keep Asfur and majestic angels in reef systems, As long as their fed alot they never seem to do any harm.

I would never try it personally, because I think its too much of a risk, But it is possible.
They said aquariums would be relaxing......(yeah right)

I didn't think I'd try it before, either, but the MO guy that is local for me (Phishybusiness.com) had one for sale for about 6 weeks in one of his prop systems, and never bothered anything. When I moved, I downgraded the agnel (traded him for another, smaller one) that he had in another one of the tanks in his system for probably two months, with clams and all. He also does this with Blueface angels.

I think Northman_with_reef is very right in saying that the key is feeding. Angels forage much like tangs do, but if they are not really hungry, they'll most likely only pick easy to get pods, etc. rather than sps or others that retract when startled and also release chemicals thrat probably don't taste too good.

Thank you both for the reply, still unsure as to what to do, I would love to have the blue girdled juvie, but I do have a ton of money in my zoos. I really don't think it would be a problem as much food as I feed , but with my luck, I would get ya know, "the one", and I am not sure I could get it out. I am planning on a 240 in wall soon, maybe I should just wait it out, but then again, if I had problems, I could always remove it when I make the switch.

    360 not 240

Cudaguy, Instead of a 240, try a 360. It is about 14 inches higher and makes a massive impact with its height. I am going to upgrade to a 360. The height just adds so much more. The fish can even look down at you if the wall height is enough.

I am a firm believer it depends on the specimen of fish. The so called reef safe angels can turn out to be a nightmare as they nip you corals. My favorite angel is the personifer, it is a truly majestic species.

Members of the genus Genicanthus are planktivores and will not bother corals or clams in the aquarium. There are at least half a dozen different species that are available in the trade.

I too go with the Genicanthus type for a definite safe bet. Not too pretty though. IMO the angels you are considering will sooner or later get bored with what you are feeding them and rip into something. Angels are like crabs... Opportunistic in nature and will eat just about anything once or twice. Try a copper band butt and a couple of pretty tangs for some color. Good luck.

Thank you all for your help, sorry for the long delay on response, been very busy with work and all, still trying to get the 180 in wall going.
but if you can, take a look at the inhabitants of the 90 i am moving into the bigger tank and tell me what you think would be the first to go if I tried one of the larger angels.

I would dive right in and place whatever you desired. I think if you put an Angel in the tank your best of putting corals in before the Angel otherwise the fish might think whatever you put in after him is dinner.

THAT is a beautiful tank! How long has it been up and running??

I'm with Ninong -- take a look at the Genicanthus angels. The Watanabei and the Masked Swallowtail are beautiful, IMO!

thank you both, almostdiva, i appreciate the compliment, the tank has been running for 2 years now, but only about 6 months with the sps. I do believe that I will not risk it with the larger angels, sorry for the mis-leading post yesterday, I suppose I come off as one of those who asks for advice and dosen't listen to what he is told. believe me, i am constantly looking for new advice, I have been reefing for yers but this sps stuff is new to me.
