    Ocean Nutrition Prime Reef

I know most people use the Formula 1 and 2 but I was curious who might be using the Prime Reef flake food as well? I picked some up a couple of months ago and the fish just love it in addition to their frozen brine shrimp. Anyone know what the difference is between this and the Formula 1 or 2 which I have never used?

    Scott,

I have never used flake Prime Reef but the frozen version of it. It contains some mysid shrimp and some other meaty seafood items which I feed fish and even some of the LPS corals with. Even Tubastraea takes it. None of my fish are big fans of flake food so I can not comment on it.
    Kind regards,

    Gene.

All of our fish love it! The clowns, gramma and even the foxface just go crazy when they see the container nearing the tank.

    Hey Scott,

I use both formula's 1 & 2. Formula one according to the label is for all marine and freshwater tropical fish. Formula 2 according to the label is for herbivorous marine and freshwater fish. I can't remember what prime reef was for but I've used that as well. Hope this helps!

Any fresh seafood will do, stay away from processed seafoods. Go easy on the shrimp, shrimp protein acts like Jell-O (a binder). Salmon will help to "color up" things. Wash and soak all seafoods in iced water with a pinch of baking soda, most are processed with ortho-phosphates or close to act as a preservative.

    I usually use:
some sort of fish filet (non-oily)
    clams
    scallops
    crab
    shrimp
    oysters

To this you can add sea weed, vitamins, minerals, etc. to tweak it to whatever you're feeding.

When I blend it, I usually do it in short bursts and stir it in-between. I like some chunks for the big guys and some liquid for the others.

Oh, one other thing. It makes a great seafood mouse too!

Copied from another hobbyist on another forum! Johnny

I have been using the Prime Reef in the medium pellet version and my fish love it. I grind the pellets alittle between my fingers before dropping it into the tank. I think i will go with the flakes next time.

My fish seem to have been trained by the sight of the container too!!

    P.S.

The wife hates it and tells me how bad it stinks everytime i feed the tank.

What i do is take all three Formula one, prime reef and the algae flake and mix it all together. If you put it in a can and shake the heck out of it it turns into very fine well mixed flake food.

I never thought about that Darin but it seems to be the best of all three worlds. Thanks for the suggestion!
