Codium... good or bad for a reef tank???

I bought this at my fish store, the owner said it was some kind of seaweed that removed phosphates but didn't know what it was called. Turns out that its called "Codium". I don't know anything about codium and wanted to know if any of you can tell me about it. I have heard that some algaes are good to have in a reef tank, but don't know about this one.

Man I have never heard of that name anywhere on reef boards! I would be curious as well as to what good it really is! Johnny

Well, here's some links to read about this green algae:

http://www.biology.ucsc.edu/classes/...orphology.html

and here is a link to an article describing invasive nature of this algae

http://www.naplesnews.com/01/08/florida/d659049a.htm

and here's one more but if you really interested to find out about Codium, try to Google it using this very keyword

Well thanks for the info.I didn't really understand much of it... to much scientific hombo jombo , but what I did get out of it is that codium really serves no purpose in the reef tank other than to take up space. I think I'll play it safe and remove it. Better safe than sorry.

Learn from me everyone...Research before you buy.

Amen to that! Why would you want to introduce something as invasive as this algae to your tank? As you could see from the article, this algae can choke the living c**p outta reefs and corals on it. Prolific as well

Never had a problem with Codium that I picked up from the Florida collectors. Grew well but was a breeze to trim and handle. Sadly it only really liked my severely overstocked tanks and did not do well when the bio-load was dropped in the consolidation process. Good reef husbandry actually starved it out and I must say, I was bummed
