feeding response

Noticed today pretty unusual feeding response/display on one of my colonies. I'm not quite sure what exactly those thin strands coming out of the axial corallites I thought they were mesenteries but I could be wrong. What do you guys think?

Gene,
I think you are correct. I have seen several of my coral do the same. Here s a picture of one of mine attacking the glass.

Regards,
Kevin

Thanks for your reply and a pic,Kevin. Mine is far away from the glass but when I was feeding the fish that day that is when I noticed this coral getting real "hairy".
Interesting tough, when power heads was turned back on those mesenterials disappeared quickly. I have a nice small colony of S.caliendrum not that far away from it and now i'm thinking that perhaps I better move it further? I don't know how damaging or potent those are.

PS. I always knew that Hydnophora is capable of doing this but never thought that Acroporas was just as "bad".

In Eric Borneman's first coral book he describes these as acontia filaments. I think that is how it is spelled, but he described them as a digestive filament. I guess that they may be as bad as hydnopora although I have yet to see any problems in my reef when my acropora release these actonia filaments.

Mine don't do it every day but they are fairly regular in exhibiting them. Plus I have noticed that it may be only a section of the reef that will release them at a time.

Hi Sue,

Thanks for your insight. I posted the same question on Erics forum but got no response so I dropped it
So far there is no damage to anything that is near this colony so I'll just leave it alone.
