what clean up crew?

what clean up crew?
what clean up crew?
i have got a 100gal tank, and am thinking about the clean up crew that i want to get, so that i have them in their before the algae starts.

in my local lfs in england they have red-leg hermit crabs, turbo (astrea, i think) snails, super (trochus) snails, green mithrax crabs, nassarius snails, and cerith snails.

i was thinking against the nassarius and cerith snails as they like the dsb and i am only going to have a sprinckling of marine gravel, like sand, on the tank floor. Is this right?

so what would you guys suggest to have in there? and when would you put them in just after the mature live rock? and would you put them in all at the same time or in stages?

i was sort of thinking of 24 red legs, 12 super snails and 6 turbo snails.
what do you guys think of this?

Welcome to REEFLAND

My personal preference is to stay away from hermits... They seem to inevitably go after my snails!!!

Right now I have about 130-140 Astrea snails 50 Nassarious and 6 Cerith snails with 2 Strombus Alatus (fighting Conch), had 3 one vanished?? But yes I do have a DSB so I would go a little lighter on the Nass snails I'd still get some though.

My tank is a 135 lit with halides and Vho you can see some pix in My gallery....

Mike

Oh yeah skip the Mythrax crab too... Get a foxface fish they do a better job anyway!!!

STAY AWAY FROM RED HERMITS! I made the mistake of putting one in my tank and it was ok for awhile and then it found out what snail tasted like. Before I knew what was going on my tank had empty shells all over the bottom. Astrea, nassarius and blue leg hermits is what I have, no complaints on these.

If you are really really insistant on Hermits get these...

http://www.wetwebmedia.com/marine/in...ermitcrabs.htm

I had those in my tank for quite awhile and NEVER actually saw one dining on a snail, but did have several occupy a snails shell... Maybe the shell was already empty, maybe they emptied it...

Good luck thats a good start on the Snails and with only 10 hermits if you do run into trouble there is not that many to get rid of... Maybe I'm just jaded cause I lost so many Snails to hermits but others mix them all the time...
