red legs and blue legs?
do these crabs eat the same algae, or do they tend to like different ones, as i have seen today that my local lfs now sells both.
so i was thinking about which one was better? do you guys have any preference? or do you think they will be able to be kept together if supplied with enough food if their is not enough algae? |

Hi Pomme!
I think, and as others have mentioned in the previous thread, that that blue legged hermits are a better choice. I also think the key to hermits and snails living together is that plenty of emtpy shells are provided for the hermits to move into at their leisure. My thinking is that hermits go after snails who have larger shells, when they are in need of a larger shell, not necessarily when they are hungry. Just my thoughts, Scott Z. |

I would go with just the blue legged hermits. And yes, I would try to get plenty of shells for them to move in and out of without disturbing your snails.

No problem my friend. Please note that even adding the empty shells will not ensure the crabs don't go after your snails. It is a precautionary measure we can take but with hermits, there is always a chance.

Yup I'd say 50/50 that at least one of those hermits gets a taste for Escargot!!!

yeah good point i think i will go for manly snails about 40 and then about 10 hermits.
the sanils will be 18 turbo, 6 super, 6 ceriths, 6 nassarius, and the crabs, maybe 5 of each or 10 redlegs, does this sound okay? on the crab point of you you would you have a mix or just the one colour? |

Thats up to You of course... sounds like you are looking for diversity in the tank, I watched Blue legs MUG a snail that had fallen over in my tank and I've never had any red legs to speak of other then the one I showed you B4. Scott (reefland) says he has had blue legs with no trouble so I guess its just like everything else in this hobby Each fish/crab is different and may act differently in each of our glass boxes!!!

from my experience red legs are the more aggressive of the two hermits. Personally I wouldn't use any hermits and juet get a variety of snails. just my $.02

yeah that is what i have decided to do, as although the hermits are more exiting they have the risk potential about them.
