new tank plumbing noisy?
new tank plumbing noisy?
i have just set up my tank, and have just done the first fill and washed it out and it is now set-up with saltwater and live rock, pictures here: www.marinefishuk.co.uk/portal/...m.php?n=529#529, marine fish uk or go to www.marinefish.co.uk and look at albums and look under andrew barnett, and they should be there But have found that the plumbing is very noisy, its basically just from the tank overflows to the sump, the overflows go through the back of the tank, where the plumbing does a 90 degree turn and then down to the sump, does anyone have any ideas of how to make this quieter? i have heard that if i put holes in the 90 degree bits that come out of the back of the tank the noise should go down as the air can escape, will this work? thanx, andrew. |

Andrew,
I don't think it would be a good idea to drill holes in the drain plumbing. Assuming that you have ball valves on each of the drains, you could try gradually closing the ball valves to see if this causes the noise to stop. You have to be very careful that you do not close them too much. ![]()

The only reason I made that suggestion is because that's what worked for me. I have a single 1.5" drain from the tank to the sump and it was noisy until I gradually closed the ball valve between the tank's drain and the sump just enough to stop the noise. This may not be the best way to do this and it may be risky, but it's what I did and so far I haven't had any problems but I don't have any large snails going down the drain, which might cause problems.
I don't know if it would help in your situation or not, I think it would depend on where the ball valves were located.

yeah i think i may put some on so that i can just close them a tad and have the water build up so that there is less noise, and as i am having snails, i will put the overflow combes on.

Yup that works well for me too... I have 2 1" drains and they are both Ever so slightly closed... also this works at the bottom end....
it is 2 90 degree elbows right next to each other so the water exits to the top... it eliminates the BURPING sound |
