Hey Chris!

It looks awesome! I was a little stumped by looking at the first picture, it appeared the tank was just filling up but I can see now it's a bare bottom. Looks fantastic!

Thanks for the compliments. By far this is the happiest I have been with any of my reefs. Now time to save up for a LifeReef sump/skimmer.

So what's your secrets; barebottom, heavy skimming, weekly 15% water changes vacuuming the barebottom?

Looking good, and since there are no fish, that keeps the Lagoon.

Very nice, What size is your tank. Looks like a 4 x 4 or something similar?

Thanks again for the kind words. Yes the tank is a 4x4x2. Looks better now IMO, no more algae on the bare bottom, and a few more and nicer Acro's. Maybe I should shoot some more pics and start a 7 month thread...
Thanks,
Chris

Any plans to put some sand on the bottom? That will probably be the size I go with for my built in. Either 4x4x2 or 6x6x2. This will not be for a few years when I build my next house. Plans are for a reef in the wall.

Never again will I have any sand in any of my tanks. In the past I always went BB, but when the DSB train pulled into town I hopped on. In the last 3 or 4 years I have revised my personal feelings on DSB's and have rejected the concept entirely. In a nutshell I found that DSB's work well for the first year and a half or so then slowly start to become detrimental. Slowly is the key word here. I kept mine for 3 years before the agrivation of maintaining my DSB caused me to rip it out. I keep my reefs for the corals and have had no issues running BB. With the sandbed I ended with algae problems and the inability to keep certain tank parameters in check. I also have a bit more flow than average in my tank, around 17,000 gallons an hour, which keeps all detritus in the water column and taken out by 50 micron socks. I run my tank skimmerless, and still have everything register in the ranges I need. Anyway this is just my personal preference and I believe everyone should study up a bit on several different methods before they reget what they have done. Remember, this is all IMHO and to each his/her own.
Thanks,
Chris

Mo last tank was BB also so I know what you are saying. I have about 1/2 inch to 1 inch of sand now. I just like the look. We will see though!

Great Pics

Well done Tank its looking great So you obviously have no regrets on using this method .So hows your tank been in regard to algae growth how often are you cleaning your glass and how often do you scrape the bottom ?I will go out on a limb here and presume that you where cleaning the bottom on a regular basis for the first few months . And have you grown any coraline on the bottom yet? ime sure that would look sensational when it takes over.
I bet not having any fish goes along way to stabilizing parametres and keeping everything happy. One last question do you have any noticeable pod life in there ime sorry about so many questions but ime very curious to the method that you are using .
Thanks in advance
Mia

Mia,
As far as algae growth is concerned, I run the magnet over the glass every 6th day or so, whether it needs it or not, and have never scraped the bottom. One must keep in mind though that I add no nutrients, other than light, to my tank. Corraline growth is good in areas that are shaded from my 400 watt halides. Around the bases of the rock work and the back of the tank are covered. Pod's and bristles, peanut worms, even spaghetti worms are all living well in and under my rockwork. I have noticed just as much variation in life forms as I did in my older DSB tanks, although a bit more sparse.

Thanks,
Chris
