It is a pretty large project but well worth the resources I think. The key to "down the road" performance will be effecient code, which I will continue to work on even after the log is released to the public. Currently the server that Reefland is hosted on has many, many upgrade options so I have no concern at all about site performance.

I do understand your concern however with putting in lots of useful imformation and then loosing it if the site goes down. My plan at this time is to allow users to be able to download their log information; in tab delimited and Excel formats.

Scott Z.

I think it's a fabulous idea. I would DEFINITELY use it. Going back to Penguin's comment about Carbon -- dunno if it's practical to have it say carbon/other media (like a magnesium sponge or whatever) or to just have an "other" catagory where we can add whatever it is whe run. For example, I LOVE polyfilter and I almost always have some hanging out in my overflow. It's amazing the gunk it pulls.

It will be fully customizable to your needs; if you run Carbon then you will have the option to choose in your options that you run carbon and schedule changes for it, same with polyfilter, filter floss or whatever else you might use. I hope to be able to go into full development mid to late January to compliment the bits and pieces of work that I have already done on it and will continue to do on it through the holidays.

I've been using ReefCon 2000 since Jan 2003. The product is useful, but very limited in what it does. It's really nothing more than a fancy Excel spreadsheet. I would really like something much more interactive. Let me know when I enter a parameter than is getting close to being outside the norm. Let me enter my tank dimensions, rock and sand so I know my correct water volume. Add a chemistry calculator to let me know how much additive (by brand) to add to get parameters back with in norms.
I know alot of these tools are already out there at different locations. It would be great to have it all incorperated into this log.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the feedback Mike! Tank dimensions and other details are on my list already but I think it will be hard to calculate the exact water volume; different rock has different mass per lb., etc but I think we can get it close.

For the tank parameters, do you think the numbers should be user selectable or standard across the board? For instance Calcium number have a bit of a range and what may be outside of your wishes may be ok for someone else? Thoughts?

Good point. I think you could set the established norms as a default for the benefit of the newer reefers and have a way the more advanced could adjust their norms. Make sure to have one of those "reset defaults" button set up.

I'd also have a drop down next to the measurement entry. ie dKH vs meq/L.

Good suggestion Mike; I'll add it to my to-do log.

For the measurement entry, that will be customized in the usercp. The usercp currently gives you the option to choose the types of tests you perform and with what brand of test or type of equipment so when entering data, the options you have available are the options you have choosen in your CP. My next move from that side is to allow the user to choose between mEq/L or dKH for Alkalinity and F or C for Temperature.

Here is the first screen shot of the log to be viewed publicly. This screen shot is viewing a specified test results page and shows lowest reading, highest reading, average, most recent test, all other test results, when the next test was scheduled to be performed and a couple of options at the bottom. Obviously this is very early in development and lots of other options will be added but I wanted to show this to you folks.

Well it will definitely NOT be done by Christmas, and probably not by the end of January. No promises or garauntees but perhaps we might start some alpha testing in Feb. Keep your eyes out for more screen shots and info, keep providing me feedback, especially those of you who use "other" products that may be lacking something you would want and keep your eyes out for me looking for testers.

I loooove it! Can't wait to see the next screen shot. And I'm SURE you won't have problem finding testing guinea pigs!

What about the animals in the tank? When they were added size etc.
Equipments and when purchased, or removed from system.

Personally, I don't keep a long of my tank. I only test for alkalinity and Ca. I follow temperature and salinity.
Certainly this is not very much as compare to other reefers.

Minh,

Equipment added, removed, when and where purchased from and for how much is on my list to do.

For those that do not use a "log" per se to monitor the water parameters, this will also be a valuable resource for other things. Such as keeping track of when and where you bought equipment and how much you payed for it, when and where you bought that coral or fish and documentation of it's growth, behavior and habits, when did you add those bulbs to your tank and when exactly should they be changed, and would you like an e-mail reminder when it is getting close to time.

I am about 1" away from being completed with the water parameter portion of the log and will start with all of these other things as soon as I do. I have spent about 15 hours already in the last 2 days finishing the test additions and got another good 5 hours left in me tonight.

Don't be drooling, it might fry out my PC and delay the release of the log.

I am really excited about it to and hope that a lot of members, both new and old, will find this to be very helpful and useful. As I sit here and work on it, I can tell you that even version 1 will be the most comprehesive log available and I have a lot of ideas on how to continually expand the features beyond version 1.

Like I've told you before,Scott, this will be the biggest thing that hit the net and reefgeeks in particular

I'm gearing up for using it already, lining up my test results in my paper log and trying to find all the reciepts that I were so good at hiding from my wifes eyes
I hope it doesn't backfire on me

Sounds like an awesome idea Scott....make sure its idiot friendly (so i can use it ) id definitely be interested in using this especially since i have several tanks so it gets hard to remember when i changed bulbs last and all that other fun stuff. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for it.
