Caulerpa light 24/7 or reverse?

Caulerpa light 24/7 or reverse?

I have had my tank set-up and running for a while now and i recently got some caulerpa in the sump, which i was lucky enough to be given.

I have heard that it can go sexual and die and then put back all the nasties that it has soaked up back into the tank!!!

I was told that you should have the light on for 24/7 and only on reverse cycle?

I see the benefits of it being on 24/7 as it will grow more and hopefully take up more of the nasties, and also it will not cause a ph crash when the lights go out on the main tank.

The benefit of having it on reverse cycle is that you put the lights to come on one hour before/after the main light come on/off, so in this way there wont be a ph crash in the tank.

I was told that it doesnt matter which way you have it as long as you 'pinch' it back every so often like once a week to once a fortnight bedending on growth.

So what do you guys do and what do you recommend?

Thanx,
Andrew

Caulepra

Pomme
I run my sump on 24 7 illumination
Well pomme ime curious to what strain you are growing in your setup from my own expeirence i have grown a lot off different types a couple off bubble types
and they all grew very well but one must dose a iron supplement for long term sustainability i have had a couple off crashes over the years but i would say thats just me not keping the nutes up to them this was only one strain that did
caulepra racemosa
I also have been growing caulepra serrulata for a few years and never ever had a problem with this algae i grow this under either lighting sched and never had a prob i honestly trim mine back when i can be bothered .

I light mine on a reverse schedule, I did notice an increase in growth from when I had the lights on 24/7 I think all life needs a dormant period. I don't really care what goes on when the lights go out... it is not my business!!!!

Growth

One would think so Pomme but when everything is sweet as far as available nutes in the water the stuff grows crazy in a short time regardless off lighting sched obviously more in a 24 7 situation. But when it begins to use up all off the available (iron) (manganese)and other trace elements growth can slow down to nothing and if left in that present state would more then likely crash.lucky for us reeftanks can be a very fertile place with our constant dosing off elements and regular feedings that can make all the difference so the growth off your caulepra can be a indication to the nutrient levels in your tank.

ahh so basically the best thing to do is keep an eye on the growth and if it does slow down give it a trim and everything should be okay?

Yup...

I really like the "algae filter" it is very easy to maintain, and if you put all the lights on timers you can just sit back and enjoy!!!
