180 Reef Tank set-up Help Please

    UPDATE 12/4/03

Tank has two 1.750" holes 7.00" from the top came with two 1.00" elbow bulkhead fittings with a snow cone end with slots in it to set the height of the water in the tank.I have been realy busy moving and trying to sell the house I moved from. The dude I bought it from was going to run 2 pipes into and across bottom with holes for water input. Then return via two 1.750 holes into amiracle sump.Sound good ? What is the deal with this tank ? I guess someone decided on this aplication and had tank drilled. There are no other holes in this tank.

the holes are 12 inches from the top of the tank. That is goning to be a problem. You are going to have to run a elbow from there up to the level that you want your water to stay at.

Are those the only holes drilled in the tank?

Your tank need to have overflow for a reef tank.
If these are the only holes, you can use them as drains and build an overflow right on this area. Drains for overflow does not need to be on the bottom.
If this tank already have overflow, it is likely use as a close loop to increase circulation.

I don't think 1" holes would be much good as drains no matter where they are. What size bulkhead fitting could you mount in a 1" hole?

    Is this a glass tank?
Instead of have pipes as overflow which can get clot up, you can built an overflow box in it's place.
You can attach an overflow box inside that tank, one side of which is the tank that have the hole in it. This box is the overflow box and the hole is the drain. Usually the drain is on the bottom, but it is OK to have the drain on the side. you need to attach the bulk head and plumb to let the water drain into your sump. I think a hole with diameter of 1.7 inches can fit a 1.5 inches bulkhead, which is reasonable for drain, if you use both of these holes for drains and plumb the return over the top.

    Yes glass tank.
Not sure what you mean here.I have a AmiracleŽ sump with bio balls.Water will be iwaki pumped from this sump up into tank. Then return via two holes on back of tank to the Amiracle sump ? Should I input back into tank from Amiracle sump with two pipes one on each end? Or if you have access to a fax
You could fax me a scetch at work 864-627-1603 Attention Jay Brennan
Or if there is an example of a similar application I could access on the web this would be awesome. My golden angel in my 90 will thank you who is in time out with a piece of lexan.I have it sectioned off about a foot from the end with a billion holes in it.It works great for new additions of fish from the rest of the gang.
