Cool Latest in Reef Keeping

Oh, man...I'm going to get into trouble!!!

I have a rather extensive history with salt water aquariums...as a child, I had a 29 gal. tank for about 8 or 10 years. Kept everything from clowns and damsels, tangs, mandrins and sea horses, shrimp, crabs, inverts...after several years of trying to maintain a successful reef, I had the opportunity too sell all the liverock and few living inverts, so I did. I had poured all kinds of money into it and all I got in return was frustration. I am sure my biggest problem was not using RO water for make up.

Fast forward to today...my sister's fiance is moving and I'm babysitting his freshwater tank. You guessed it...the wheels in my head are turning...

I started out thinking a fish only tank. I was browsing some sites, found this one, and stumbled upon the pics of those Japanese reef tanks...I NEARLY CRIED!!!!

I have all my old equipment (tank, PC lights, CPR BakPak skimmer), but I know what a commitment a reef tank is...both time and money...neither of which I am made of.

I still need to think this through, but was wondering if you could recommend some websites that cover the latest trends in reefkeeping. I've been out of the loop for a few years, so I know things have changed. Is it any easier or cheeper???

I appreciate all you help!!

Josh

Hi JoshS and Welcome to Reefland!

Personally, I think sites like this are good to learn what the latest trends are and to discuss what other hobbyiest are doing. You've come to the right place! Wet Web Media is a good site as well and there are many others, way to many to list here.

There have recently been many great books published for enthusiasts by Robert Fenner, Anthony Calfo, Eric Borneman and others that are good for beginners and seasoned hobbyiest, you can find some of them in our Book Store:

If you have any specific questions, feel free to post and ask here, many people here to help out!

Good Luck,
Scott Z.
