Night Time Photos
I took some shots of some of my coral at night to see some good polyp extensions. These photos were taken with a flash of course to be able to get some light and focus for the shots.
This piece of coral is an interesting piece. I has nice lime green flourescent tips. ![]() Nice dark greenish acro with brown polyps, however it appears dark brown with a flash. ![]() This is going to be a real nice piece with it's white polyps. ![]() I hope this one continues to get healthy again. Very cool lime green coral. ![]() This is a great piece, look at the polyp extension on this one. ![]() Of course nothing is complete without a shot of the acro crab inside of it. ![]() This piece will be beautiful. The color is off because of the flash, but it is a nice blue/purple millepora. Of course for some reason this acro crab likes it at night, not in the day ... ![]() ------------------ MDM ![]() |

Amazing shots,Chuck!
How do you focus on the piece without any light? I tried using flashlight to focus camera first but it's not enough light for it to focus I always wanted to take some pics of corals at night becouse as you have mentioned, the polyp extention is amazing at night.

Hey Gene, some cameras use a strobe type flash to focus when the light is low, or some have an IR auto focus assist. I like the IR better myself less annoying to the subjects.

I have a coolpix885 and I don't remember if I got this IR or a strobe type flash or whatever.I think I need to go back to manual again...where the heck is my glasses..? Chuck, If I remember correctly, you have CP995,right? How much difference is between the two in functions? I'm snowed in solid here and I think I'll practice with my camera today or read the manual instead of shoveling,my back is killing me already ![]()

Thanks guys.
Gene, I use a Canon G2 camera. It has a built in light that emits in the dark to aid in focusing. It lights up forward until it focuses and then shuts off prior to the shutter and flash. Seems to work out pretty well huh? |

Look for focus Assist in the manual there should be something there... By the way how much snow did you get? I've only seen a couple flakes so far...
On your camera I don't see any type of focus assist listed, oops http://www.photo.net/ezshop/product?product_id=4422 BTW I guess I forgot to mention those are some fantastic pictures MtnDewMan keep them coming. I still have some learning to do with my Canon 10D I guess I'll have to move a macro lens closer to the top of my wish list ![]() ![]() |

Chuck,
I love this green color ![]() I have this green colony that looks a bit like yours, it was a dark brown frag that broke in two and after I glue them on the rock they fused together. It turned this pale green color..sometimes I wonder if mine is not bleaching? What do you think? ![]() Here's also a shot from the top...

WOW that is crazy difference from night to day. To bad you can't trick that coral into extending its polyps during the day
![]() Gene the 10D is awesome I've taken over 2000 pictures since we got it in July. And HOLY COW 12" of the white stuff already is alot of work for sure!!! ( I don't want to actually say the "sn" word) |

Nice pics, Chuck! I'm always surprised when any of my day pictures are in focus. No telling what my night pictures would look like.

Gene, that coral looks real similar to what I have. Of course, there are so many different ones that look similar ... haha, would be cool if they are the same

Gene -- That's a GREAT shot of your tubastrea. They are my favorite coral. I don't think we've ever seen pics of it with the polyps extended before. Does it only open at night? I know some people who have them get them to open up most of the day, too. I'm wondering if they just feed it with the lights on all the time or what? Rebecca |

I agree, just becouse they look similar doesn't make them similar ![]() Quote:
I think you answered your question yourself. IMO if I'd bother to feed it during the day it would be open all the time but I always feed it at night becouse I felt that it would be more natural(?). This is the reason I could never take a shot of it with the polyps open before...untill I desided to try that flashlight "technique" ![]()

Gene,
I forgot to mention, that shot with the flashlight turned out very well. Looks like you have that down to a science to get a good focus. |
