The ribbon, like other bio media, can trap waste and become a problem. That would be my guess; I don't think there is any functional reason to remove it; meaning I don't think removing it or not will change the performance of the skimmer.

CPR bak pak

the intent of CPR for the "blue stuff" is as a bubble trap. As you know microbobbles tend to become a problem in a tank. In most applications the cpr will not release bubbles even without the blue stuffin it.

The best and most efficiecnt way to use the cpr is with the preskimmer that can be bought especially for the unit. not expensive.. Have a look in ebay.

When you first start out remove the blue stuff and if you have problems with microbubbles then you can put it back in and once the skimmer has established itself you can remove it again. As Scott sait waste does get trapped in it.

A buddy of mine uses the empty camber for carbon.

ope thishelps.

Regards,
Herman

Actually, i believe the ribbon is called a "Bio Bale" and is intended as a biological filter, though it would work as a bubble filter as well. They do make a bubble trap which works quite well if there is a bubble problem. http://www.cpraquatic.com/products/bakpak.html
I would remove it myself though.

It is Bio-Bale and it is both a bio filter AND a bubble trap. The Bak-Bak 2R is their HOT skimmer with no bio-filter. It has an extra baffle to help eliminate the bubble problem caused by removeal of the filter media.
As for the "traps detritus" comment. All bio filter medias will trap detritus without proper care. Just pull out the Bio-Bale once a month and swish it in a bucket of salt water. This eliminates the detritus but leaves the good bacteria.

Ok, just wondered why some people do away with it and some dont. Thats pretty much what I do,rinse it off about every 2-3 weeks.

With a media such as Bio-Bale, this will work just fine however other media such as bio balls traps waste within them and they would require more in depth cleaning; which in turn would be counter productive since you would be cleaning the bacteria right off of them.
