Water movement?

Water movement?

Okay why is it that i always hear that you want about 20x water movement in our tanks, but more with acros at around 30x, as this would obviously be a different amount of water moved in different sized tanks. Is it to do with food, or to keep the corals clean? So should i be looking for a certain amunt of water moved around the acros like 10,000 litres, or ?x the water volumn?

Also when working out my water movement i have two tunze streams that come on in surge sequence. They each move 7,000 litres an hour. So should i count this as 7,000 litresor 14,000 litres?

great question Pomme...

THe values are just guidelines but your right it is different for every tank, thats why they give a variables an example 20X tank value for a 100 gallon tank is 2000 GPH. (i usually here 10-15X recommended state side).

Very good topic!
I think you would be ok w/ 20-30x....but its not just turnover rate....its how the turnover is placed...is it utilizing an alternating pattern? like a SCWD, Seaswirl, Wavestrip etc etc. Also one thing that I dont think is understood as much is think in terms of Volume not Velocity. You can have a sweet turnover rate but if your blasting corals they more than likely wont like it....if you have a massive pump it needs to be dispersed and not concentrated. The more dispersement the better.

Ya know what I just thought of is JT he has recently setup a tank that I think really hits on this topic....lemme see if I cant get him to post some pics of his tank in here.

I'll post some pics soon. I want to do a little more cleanup before I start putting pics on the BB's.

Good subject ... I like a lot of water flow, but like some have posted, a lot isn't all there is ... the key is to have a lot in all the right places. I know for a fact that I have a good amount of flow in my tank ... probably around 30x, but I have dead spots that build up algae and detritus. So if you are building from scratch, pay attention to those areas that can build up detritus.

Hows this for a closed loop. This is a pic from the back of the tank but not complete plumbing. Im not sure how Im gonna get around the returns but Ill figure it out. The cls is run by a amp3k (thansk again Tank) . I have 4-3/4th returns reduced down inside the tank from 1.5 inch pvc. I am also considering a spraybar run from the same pump but not sure if Ill have enuff flow pressure to it to be effective for both the returns on the closed loop and the spraybar also. Return from the sump will be a mag 12 into a sqwid. They are the top 2 returns. The next row down is the returns for the closed loop and the last row of 2-1.5 intakes for the closed loop.
