What size bulkhead for Internal Overflow on 55gal
What size bulkhead for Internal Overflow on 55gal
I'm going to be doing a Internal Overflow on my acrylic 55 witht he durso on the back wall using more than likely a 6"x6" internal overflow box.. My question is what size bulkhead should I use? and what size return pump should I use? I currently have a mag 12 but feel that this would probably be too big unless it would be safe to throttle it down a bit.. I am planning on having a return on each side of the tank and Maybe doing the overflow in the center of the tank or the left rear back of the wall. and suggestions would be great. i plan on doing this in the next week.. TIA dan __________________

Hey Dan!
I think a 1" drain will be just fine. And your right about the MAG 12 being too much for just 1 overflow. It will be ok to throttle it back using a ball valve on the output (not the input for the pump) but you have to ask yourself if it is worth loosing the flow that the pump would put out. If you think it is, look at another overflow or look at using a small pump. ![]() Scott Z. |

Dan, check out the hole drilled in my tank in the other thread. Its a 2in. hole, that takes a 1 1/2in. bulkhead, which takes 1 1/4in. piping. Thats the smallest I would go myself. I believe in oversizing when it comes to overflows. Mind you I only have one. My 225 had a pair of the same size.
Which ever you do, purchase the bulkhead before drilling. So many sizes fit whatever size hole, that its confusing. ![]()

Thanks guys.. I'm now thinking of going with two 1" bulkheads mounted in the back wall of the tank in one single over flow box say 10" wide x 6" deep x 6" tall??? with the durso standpipes mounted outside of the tank.. Like I've been seeing done alot lately.. I would really like to use the mag12 mostly since i have it then don't have to buy another return and I would like to have an extremally high return so i don't have to run any powerheads in the tank to maximize room for SPS and clams=) Le me know what think?

I have 2 1" drains in my 135 (via a CPR overflow) and I run my Mag 12 Wide open.... So I think that is a perfect match!!!
