Phytoplan.

Phytoplan.

I was reading practical fishkeeping today and i cam apon an article about coral foods and i noticed the 'Two Littles Fishies - PhytoPlan' and thought it sounded quite good.

"PhytoPlan is a spray dried blend of several strains of phytoplankton. The intact cells are not alive, but when re-hydrated they are a micro encapsulated source of color-enhancing beta carotene and astaxanthin pigments, vitamins, amino acids and essential fatly acids. Spray-dried phytoplanklon is a concentrated food, which is more economical to use than live phytoplankton and it has a much longer shelf life. The blend of three phytoplankton species provides an excellent nutritional profiler superior to any single spray-dried phytoplankton. High in DHA. Ideal food for filter feeding invertebrates that feed on phytoplankton, such as soft and stony corals, anemones, feather duster worms, clams, sponges and tunicates. PhytoPlan simulates food webs in closed aquarium ecosystems. Daily addition of PhytoplanTM promotes the development of zooplankton in aquariums, further benefitting filter feeding invertebrates and fishes that feed on small zooplankton. PhytoPlan is also a great supplement that can be used to enrich the nutritional value of dried, frozen! or live fish foods. Soak dry foods briefly in a mix of 1/4 teaspoon of PhytoPlan with two tablespoons of water Mix thawed frozen foods with a small quantity of PhytoPlan, which will stick to them. Also use PhytoPlanTM to enrich the nutritional value of live Anemia (brine shrimp). For nauplil, simply add some PhytoplanTM to the well aerated culture water after the Airemia hatch and allow a few hours for them to consume it. For live adult brine shrimp add some phytoplanTM to the aerated culture water, allow a few hours for them to consume it, and harvest the "gut-loaded" shrimp to feed to your fishes. "

It sounds good but doesnt all food? I was just wondering if any of you guys have tried it and what you think of it?

Andrew

I have been using this product for the last four months, this stuff is great and a lot cheaper than the live stuff. My filter feeding corals are doing great.

I used to use it. But I found that Bioplankton (liquid life), is easier to use. You keep it in the freezer, it has a pump for easier dosing, & it lasts me around 6 months (using the smaller bottle).

I used ESV Spray dried phytoplankton for a while before I switched to live foods. Just be careful with how much you use. It sneaks up and you if you use too much, soon you have a nasty cyno problem if your not careful.

What do you mean by a nasty cyno problem.

I am sure he means that from increasing the feeding to his animals and tank, his nitrates raised and led to some cyanobacteria growth in his tank.

Overfeeding can lead to an increase in nutrients in your tank. Lot's of things we add to the tank accumulate over time. We don't notice any problems for a while then suddenly you have a bad outbreak of an algae of some sort. I was just warning you to use it sparingly as it, as all dead foods we add, can cause water quality issues.

I think Joe brings up a very good point here....Live food doesnt really have a chance to decay, I use cyclopeeze as well but use it very sparingly. I recently started back up a plankton culture station but it can be very tedious and time consuming....I know everyone has time for that on top of the time they spend on their tank LOL

yeah have cut down the amount am feeding cyclopeeze and golden pearls a bit, as only been using them 2 weeks, and the cyno has cleared up.

but i think it started as my rowa phos became hard in its canitster and had to change it and i think the cyno started when the rowa phos stopped working?

but i has done wonderes for the tank i get full polyp extendion from montis, fungia and some acros during the day !
