My new T. gigas

I am back into clams. here are a few pictures of the clams that I got recently. I have about 15 clams in my tank right now. Some will go to friends a a few will stay in my tank.

My new T. gigas. Very nice with gold/green fluorescent and lots of purple dots.

One of my teardrop Maximas. I showed some other ones before but this one is unique.

This is some nice clams,Minh. I don't think I've seen Gigas with so many dots before Mine has some but yours is just regular polka dot.Gorgeous!

What happened to your old Gigas? I think you've said that you were able to save it,if I rmember correctly. Good luck with the beauties. This teardrop is really special and quite unique.I know that I never seen one like that before anywhere.

The T. gigas lived through the immediate disaster. He was huge and I was too depressed to set my tank up again so I boarded him at a friend's tank. My friend's tank have very high light. He had 4 400 W MH and 3 110 W VHO over a 6 foot tank. It was way too much light for the Gigas, so I moved hime to a low light rock tank at a LFS. He was doing great and is recovering until they put fresh uncured live rock into the tank to cure it. They did not even remove hime temporaly to another tank until the ammonia level drop. The ammonia spike killed him. I have his shell by my swimming pool right now. It was sad when I got the shell home. My son cried.

Scott,
Sure, I am still hunting for beautiful clams to add into my tank. I think you saw the two Ultra Maxima. I have 11 teardrop Maxima in my tank right now. 5 to 8 of these will be given to friends. I will just keep fewer then 5 teardrops. I also have 5 ultra Crocea in my tank and a few Squamosa. I am still looking for an gold strip patern Derasa for the tank also.
I am a clam/SPS reefer all the way, more into clams than SPS.

Thanks. I think he has the most dots I have ever seen in a Gigas. Not that I seen that many of them in person, just in pictures.

Gene,
Are you sure you don't want to reconsider my offer by email the other day.

Minh,
That is one beautiful clam. I've been looking on the wholesale list each week but I never see the gigas offered. I did get a teardrop maxima in Tues. but someone bought it today that's the bummer about owning a LFS.
Very sorry to hear about the loss of your big one.

Regards,
Kevin

Kevin,
This is one of the clam that came from that shipment about 6-8 months ago. A friend of mine bought him then. It did not grow well in his tank. he had it in an outdoor pool and it got hot and cold.
He traded it to me for a Squamosa (same size at about 5-6 inches) and a teardrop Maxima.

Minh,

So sorry to hear about the LFS killing your gorgeous T. gigas. It is hard to believe that anyone in the business longer than 48 hours would cure live rock in the same tank with any livestock but stories like this are all too common to believe things will ever change.

Your new gigas is truly gorgeous. I can tell you that the two really huge gigas at the Waikiki Aquarium in Honolulu are so spectacular they take your breath away. They are the most beautiful clams I have ever seen. Makes me want to run out and buy an 850-gal tank just so I could keep one.

Good luck with your new setup.

Nope, not even close.

The ones at the Waikiki have a lot more color than that. Take another look.

Now,George, that wasn't a contest I just added those for the viewing of other Gigas and comparison but...you win

Here's my own that is approaching 9 inches and getting quite heavy.I bought it close to 9 month ago and it was about 5.5" in length but it does not have anywhere near the coloration that Minh's clam has.

Mine came from the same box that was send to the US at that time. My friend got a small one. It did not grew very much while it was with him due to not optimal condition. It is now only about 5 inches or so. He traded this clam to me for a Squamosa and a teardrop Maxima. I love it. it was the pick of about 15 clams or so. I really think that the spots are something really special. i know that as they get larger, there will be even more and larger spots.

Minh,

I'm sorry but I unintentionally had provided wrong information about when I recieved this clam I should have checked my logs first.
I got the clam on 12-4-02 and it was listed at 5", so I'm estimating the growth at approx. 3.5".Do you think it is growing normally or is it too slow for this species of Tridacna? It is one tough clam, though,as it had been through pyramid snails battle and Aiptasia removals, etc, etc.
Hey Scott, if I had that online log available right now,I could have looked that up without digging for reciepts and checking when I took the first picture
