Pesky brown algae ridding tips?
I'm really starting to get ticked. This algae is really starting to get out of hand. The tank has been up and running for 2 weeks now. The actinic blue distorts the reddish color, but you can see the coverage on my LR below:
Ok, nevermind, I can't figure out how to post pics. I don't have my own website or anything. Trust me, these rocks are napey....I got those dumb snails off eBay and they aren't eating any algae. The few hermits I have in there are gettin their snack on all day and night. Here's my water parameters as of 1 hour ago: Ammonia 0ppm Nitrite tr. (<0.05ppm) Nitrate 5ppm I did a 50% water change 72 hours ago b/c my nitrites were getting high. They've been steadily declining until today, and if there were any today, it was just barely. Can I go ahead and add some turbos and margaritas in a day or 2? I'm pulling my hair out b/c all my buds are starting to come look at my tank and it looks like a "well used" gas station bathroom ![]()

The problem is not your water parameters, it is the age of the tank. Diatom algae is almost inevitable in a new aquarium and can take several weeks to a couple of months before it goes away. Snails, crabs, cukes; they are all just temporary fixes, the only true fix is patience. Don't perform any water changes and let the tank run it's course, it will eventually subside.

Yup... I would put a WHOLE mess of snails in there though. The algae will subside and the Snails will have an easier time keeping up with it after a while. I have about 150 snails in my tank, and they do a very good job of keeping the algae down, for you 55 I would add at least 24 in a couple days. Just like you said, make sure the NH3 and No2 are gone.

Your tank is cycling. Unfortunately, that is a part of it. It will go away. It just takes a few weeks. The snails and crabs will help eliminating it. Just keep cleaning it off of your glass. No worries!
