WOW.... That is super cool, just don't let the TANG POLICE see you... 4 tangs in the same tank! Have you had any issues? How much water do you think you actually have in circulation? By the looks of it, the 175 gallons in the tank is only MAYBE 1/2 of the total?

The tank started cycling in April with Uncured Fiji from Premium Aquatics. I started added livestock in June. So 9 months
![]() I am not worried about the tang police, I think I am fine with the # I have. I actually have 7 tangs. 4 in the main tank and 3 in the 300g in the basement. I have had no issues, when I picked them I picked them as different as possible, they all get along, there are never any quarrels and if they start getting to big and if there is a problem I can move them down to the 300g in the basement. I have had the Yellow tang for 6 years, the Salfin for 3 years, the Blue Hippo for 2 1/2 years, and the clown tang for 2 months. I have 175 in the tank and 300g in the stock tank in the basement and 30-40 in the acryclic sump in the basement. Subtract the rock and sand and I am probably running 450 gallons of actual water. I am waiting for my second tank to get here a 4x3x3 for a inwall in the basement which I will attach to the main system.

All I see is red X's. I wonder what happened to all your pictures. Your thread looks a lot like my thread now.

That is a very nice set up John! Something to surely be proud of. Could you explain your back room for us and explain the flow of the system and equipment you use?
Thanks, Scott Z. |

Sweet tank John!!! That is a nice-looking set-up. What type of lighting do you use there? Have you ever had any issues with coral stining each other?

Hey Scott - Thanks! Maybe its Reef Tank of the month material
I have a Iwaki 100 RLT and a MAK 4 for my return pumps. They push water into the 175 bowfront and the bowfront drains into the 300g stock tank. In the bowfront I have 6 MaxiJet 1200's hooked up to a RedSea Wavemaker. Under the tank I have a Aqua-Medic PH meter so I can always watch the PH (a little paranoid). The 300g stock tank then drains into a 55g custom acrylic sump. I use the Aqua-Medic T500 skimmer and the Aqua-Medic T5000 Calcium Reactor. The skimmer is using all AquaMedic Oceanrunner pumps, a 2500 to feed the skimmer and 2 3500's to mix water and air in the skimmer. The Calcium Reactor T5000 is fed by the MAK4 by a Tee on the return line. The water inside the reactor is cycled by a Ehiem pump. I use Aqua-Medic Hydrocarbonate for my media. The reactor is controlled by the Aqua-Medic PH Computer and the PH Meter is inside the Reactor. I have a 6ft Aquaspacelight over the tank and I have a 4ft Aquaspacelight over the 300g stock tank. The stock tank is mainly to increase my water volume and growout xenia and macro algae for nutrient export. I have a AquaController Pro which monitors and keeps a watchfull eye on my system. This is hooked up into a laptop so I can control everything locally or through the internet. The 2 100g stock tanks that are on top of each other are for my water changes. The top one receives the water from my Aquatic Reef Systems Water Filter (Poseidon). When it is time to do a water change I open a 2inch ballvalve on the bottom of the 100g tub and drain the water into the lower one. I then mix the salt there. My waterchanges are actually quite simple. I have a strainer adjusted to a certain height in the 300g so when I open the a ballvalve on the 300g it drains into my water waste line in my house. When the tub drains to the point it needs to, I open turn 2 other valves which directs the circulation pump (Quietone) to push the water back into the 300g tub. I am a big Aqua-Medic fan, I love there equipment. FishPharmD - Thanks! They're Aqua-Medic Aquaspacelights with the Aqua-Medic 10k bulbs. No problems with stinging yet. Not looking forward to that happening though as my corals mature. ![]()

Very nice, John!
![]() I would imagine that with all of that extra water volume in the basement (in Colorado, no less) you don't need a chiller to maintain fairly constant water temperatures. What is your daily water temperature range? What's the distance between the bottom shield on your Aquaspacelight and the main tank's surface? Looks to be around 8" or so. I have my Aquastarlight Future fixture 11" above the surface and I still have problems with heating in the summer. I would like to lower my fixture down to 8" but I need to get a chiller first.

very nice tank! I really like the aquascaping you've done, expecially all the little caves and such. What kind of rock do you have in there?
On a side note I hate to alarm you but there appears to be a rather large clownfish floating mysteriously above your tank in the third pic. I'd keep an eye on that one that's just not normal. Henry

Ninong - I have heating issues, issues keeping it warm.
I have 2 500w titanium heaters in the acrylic sump, and a 300watt titanium in the tank and 300g stocktank. I hold my temp at 80 and it only ranges .5 before the Aquacontroller kicks the heaters back on. The shield is about 6-8 inches off the water surface. I have a AquaLogic 1/3 inline chiller if you want to buy it. I'd sell it cheap, have no need for it anymore.. ![]() hcp28 - Thanks! The holes are actually pretty large. I used all Fiji Rock from premiumaquatics.com (un-cured). 300lbs. Yeah, those are my little little fishys my wife got me for xmas. ![]()
