garlic magic and more!
hey guys,
thanks to all your inputs, my hippo tang and solarensis wrasse are now relatively free of ich, although they have not pass the danger zone yet. I took ninong advice and soaked my regular food (formula 2 and mysis shrimp) in finely chopped and smashed garlic, added a couple spoonfuls of Boyd's vitachem, and let sit in fridge. Within 2 to 3 days, the ich magically dissapeared from the hippo. Considering how sick he was, the treatment is rather amazing, unless my lazy, over-fed cleaner shrimp actually went to work during the night. To me at least, garlic is no longer a legend. However, my hippo is still infected with something and still seems to be stressed. Although most of the ich has fallen off, little bumps from underneath the skin are appearing around the ventral (belly area). I have no idea what they are, but I know they are not ich. They are almost like pimples and the bumps are discolored, not white cottonballs like ich that look obviously attached. A guys from LFS has mentioned an illness called lymphocytsis, but offers no treatment. Does anyone know what this is? Any suggestion on treatment would be great. It's always a great feeling to nurse a sick fish back to complete health. I'm almost there. Thanks guys. |

I read your post about the ich treatment of garlic and vitamins, and had a couple of questions, as I'm working on a bit of an ich problem myself. How long do you soak the food? Where did you pick up the Boyd's vitachem? I've been using garlic extract and Seachem Reef Plus and letting brine shrimp/ Formula one soak in it, with some positive results, but there are a couple fish that aren't looking that great. Just curious to see if your process may work better than what I'm doing. Thanks in advance! Patrick |

there is a thread about 1.5 to 2 weeks ago called "please save a life" that has many good info on ich treatment. If you search under "ich", it should come up.
what I did was chopped fresh garlic as fine as I can, going at it over and over again. mix the same amount of garlic with my normal food (formula two and mysis shrimp), so half garlic half food, mash everything up with my finger into a mush, add a couple spoonfuls of boyd's vita-chem (it's just food supplement like selcon, you can get at your fish store), let everything sit in the fridge for 3 hrs before freezing it. When i feed, i let the mixture melt for an hour, dip my finger in it and let it drip into the tank. the key is to have very very fine pieces of garlic, so that the fish eats them. all said, it is very likely that my hippo recovered on it's own, as he got used to the new fish in the tank. who knows? but it's still worth a try. good luck. |
