Maxi-jets in 55 Gallon?

I was thinking of upgrading my powerheads. Plan on getting 2 Maxi-Jet 1200. One blowing across the back of the tank and one across the front. And using 2 of my 170gph (Which I have in there now.) One at left center rear of the tank blowing towards the front of the tank at a slight angle. And one at the right center of the tank doing the same. Will the 1200's be to much for the 55gallon? Should I get 2 900's instead? I'm just now switching from FO with LR to a reef. Currently have a large Colt (including two frags), two mushroom rock, Brown polyps, Astrea snails, Brittle star, serphant star, Cardinial, Maroon clown,(My Lawn Mower Blenny should be here this weekend.), and 100# Figi rock.

I think that sounds like a plan!! In a reef you want to move the water!! Maybe add one of those wavemaker powerstrips and then you'll really be in business.

So you think the 1200's won't be too much movement.

Just my .02 but I have 2 1200 maxi jets in my 55 and it's not too much at all. I also have a smaller power head and a Sea swirl return from my canister to mix up the currents and it is perfect for my tank, I wouldn't change a thing.

I thought I would add a little more flow and Maxi-jet seems to be a good quality power head. Right now i'm just running 3 179 gph power heads, figured its time to turn some real water.

Nope. I think that would be ideal.

You can't have too much water turnover
for example in my 55 I'm just about done setting up. I don't have any powerheads but I'll have 850GPH coming into the tank through the return pump and another 1200GPH from my closed loop with SCWD.. as for the mj1200's I have 8 of them on my 90gallon and have been very happy with them.

Now thats alot of GPH turned. I was just afraid it might be too much flow for some of the coral. But all I plan on keeping is LPS and some softies and mushrooms. Hoping this will keep some of the hair algae down. (Don't have a whole lot, but more than I want.) My LawnMower blenny should be here some time this weekend, that'll help too. Only hair algae I have is on my LR. So its not to bad.
