We have Cyano all over the sand. We had ich and removed all the fish 3 weeks ago, so we are no longer feeding anything in the tank. Yet the cyano keeps coming back. Could it be the skimmer or the water we have been adding or both? 75g FOWL

How old is your tank?
It could be a combination. Obviously if there is cyano present there are some nutrients somewhere for it to feed from; could be a lack of maintanence or some bad water being added. Do you use a RO/DI unit? Scott Z. |

About 3 months is the time that new tanks start to experience a bit of cyano. What are your current nitrate readings?
Here are some other things to look at: 1. If you have a TDS meter, what is the source water reading? 2. Make sure there is plenty of current in the tank; aiming a powerhead directly at the cyano is a temp. solution. 3. Manually remove as much as possible. Scott Z. |

hey, is cyanobacteria(i think) that brown stringy algae? I too removed my fish for the same reason, and now i'm seeing hairy brown algae. i've read its from excess nutrients, also nitrates and poor water. i dont have an ro/di unit, just a small di unit from aquarium pharmacueticals, i dont think it works all that great. i think i'm gonna start getting my water from a machine outside walgreens. i'm also gonna put an extra cpr bak-pak and hang on refugium. hopefully this will give me some export, and be able keep the cyano from the main tank. maybe it'll deminish with more partial water changes using good water.

The Nitrate reading was clear for a long time and now is at the 3rd yellow level up from zero. The Nitrites have never been bad, and I can never get the amonia to zero, no matter how many water changes I do. These readings are still the same even after 3 weeks of no fish in the tank.
What is a TDS meter. We have a well and the water is good, but I'd like to be able to test it for anything bad for the aquarium. An RO unit is so expensive and I don't have a LFS to get water from. I was thinking the cyano is caused by the skimmer not working right and maybe the water being not perfect. |
