Bubbles bad for corals?

We've heard from many different people that air bubbles can/will kill corals. How true is this? We were just in a LFS (new one for us) yesterday, bought 3 new frags, and they have a surge tank set up causing a TON of bubbles. I didn't see any problems with the corals they have, and everything looked in good health. Does anyone have an oppinion about the "dreaded air bubble"?

thanks Dennis and Andrea

I think they can irritate the coral if they attach to it and remain for a long period of time. Surge tanks do typically release a lot of bubbles into the water however the surge itself is strong enough to keep plenty of water moving across the coral which prevents them from sticking to it.

Natural reefs are full of air bubbles, just check out the reefcrest after the wave had crushed it. Scott is right about having sufficient flow in the tank that would take care of the bubbles and won't let them stick to anything for too long.

The only thing I have seen bubbles do damage too are Gorgonians.

Bubbles ar no problem to corals and fish. Doesn't look too good in pictures and make the water clowndy but otherwise no problem.

I agree with Minh. IMO other than people not wanting to see them, bubbles should pose no problems.
