Well, before Scott archives this thread I figured I'll post couple of new pics that I try to take monthly of this coral(to compare growth). It has grown even more since the last picture and even regrown tissue over my sloppy glue spills on the lower parts

It is becomming one of my favorite corals becouse it's so tough I also added an extra pics of the smaller frag and a silly colored A.tortuosa

Nice Gene! There can't be too many pictures of your corals for me

Gene, I love how that piece looks! Great growth too in just a month.

Another question, have you had problems with your star polyps at all? Mine is starting to grow like yours (i.e. everywhere lol) and i'm afraid if it bothers sps at all. If not, I will just not prune it.

Hi Ilham,

Thanks! It grew pretty well in the three month that I have this coral(or what's left of it ).
To be perfectly honest, I do not like the star polyps being this close to my 'sps' colonies but so far I had no real issues with them. However, I know for a fact that they can be a problem when they start overgrowing things. I usually peel some off and discard it or glue it on the overflow in my other tank.
BTW, I only have them on one piece of rock that came from(don't laugh-GARF ) and they are far enough from my corals but the pics make it look a lot closer.
My advice would be to stay on top of it and if they come too close just peel some back.I sort of like them becouse they provide some refuge for small critters, I see lots of pods and even small bristleworms hiding there.

Star polyps is the devil! I do like them, but I would only have them on an isolated rock surrounded by sand. In my old tank, I was forever peeling them off the rocks and it was a losing battle. They get down in holes in the rock or creep under corals and can no longer be controlled.

Well, I am really sorry to resurect such an old thread, folks, but....

Since next month will be a year when I first got this coral I figure that I owe everyone an update.
For the most part the coral done real well for me, despite the fact that I never had it secured enough and it kept falling off and ending up either on the sand or on top of another colony . Well, I finally remedied that problem and now have it in it's own spot on top of the flat piece of rock, no more falling down... It lightened up a bit in the main body but still has intence blue coloration at the margins of the branches that I yet to capture properly with my camera.

So now I let the pictures do the talking...

This picture was taken a bit after I had to frag the colony in attempt to try and save it from TRN event, sometime in April I believe.

and this is in MAy of the same year, 2004.

Here it is in October 2004...

and this picture was taken today...I must say that I am still in disbelief that I was able to save this coral from apperent death and that it did so well after surviving. It is an amazement for me to be able to observe resilience of the Acropora corals in person.Eventhough it is only once that i was able to save a coral from RTN.

and another pic shot today as well, sorta more of a full view of its surroundings ( or another lame excuse to add one more picture ).

Kevin, would you care to take another crack at ID on this one. It looks totally different from when I first saw it making it impossible now for me to even take a guess. It looks somewhat similar to A.formosa and the corallites do crush easily with fingers, if that means anything.

Gene,
It sure looks like A. formosa to me. Just a guess of course It looks very healthy and like it would like to get very large in your tank

Kevin

Thanks for looking at it, Kevin. I am leaning towards A.formosa myself and now will mark it tentatively as such. I can always mark it as A.whateveritensys, of course...

I think I'll keep my eye on this one, Kevin, since it's a stag ( more or less) I can frag it easily.

The pic is very decieving, Mike. There is ample room between the frags for flow and some growth

Hi Rebecca,

Yup, it is totally different looking and grown a lot. It has interesting history and a special place in my tank and in my heart.
