southdown play sand

is it safe to place a bed of southdown play sand on top of an arganite/livesand bed?

I think it's better to do the opposite, place live sand on top of the dry sand. However if that is not an option, you can add dry sand on top of livesand in slow intervals, maybe 1/4" at a time.

Southdown Tropical Play Sand from the Caribbean IS aragonite sand. You can add it to your existing sand bed at any time but it would be best to add it in a very shallow layer, as Scott recommended, so as not to smother any existing epifauna.

What exactly do you mean by "aragonite/livesand bed?" Are you talking about a packaged product you purchased from the LFS? Or are you talking about a real live sand bed with real live wormy critters in it? The answer is the same either way, I'm just wondering what you are talking about.

by argonite/livesand bed i mean i bought a bag of arganite sand and a bag of "live sand" with little wormy things in it lol and mixed them together

Southdown is aragonite sand and is a good addition to your sand bed.The above advice about adding small amounts at a time over a few weeks is good advice.

small ammounts would be what, a cup? a pound? help me out here, i have a 30gal cube. im thinking of doing this becuase i think my sand bed is too shallow and i want to achieve that fine sand look. thanks

A small amount means adding about 1/4" - 1/2" at a time to the existing sand bed and then waiting a couple of weeks before adding any more.
