Sycon sponge?
I have tons of these little Sycon sponges(i think?) growing like crazy on my LR. One is about 1/2 inch, the others are really small, but so many of them. I guess since I have no fish, they're starting to multiply. No trigger to eat-em-up. They're little white bubble type things(i have no idea how to explain them
) with a small polyp, mouth(?) at the end. I guess they're filter feeders, so they cant be too bad. Any comments/experiences on these things, let me know. ThanksLeddy |

Your correct, they are harmless filter feeders that will cause no problems, other than there being an abundance of them. I think we're talking about the same thing here; all white and the end of it is a bit "feathery"?

Yeah, we're definitly talking about the same thing. Theres sure is an abundance of them, at least 100 tiny little ones, and a few a bit bigger, but one is a pretty good size. Thats good to hear that they're not harmful. I guess when I get some fish in there, they'll snack on them. My shrimp haven't really been munching on them, not that i've noticed at least. Anyway, thanks for the reply Scott.

Hey Reefland, do know of any fish that'll munch these things? I'm not planning on keeping any aggressive fish this time around, probably 3 to 5 green chromis, a royal gramma, and a 6 line wrasse. I'm starting to see these things everywhere, even behind my PH's. I'm not bothered by them, but I would like to have a fish later down the road that'll control them. I'm gonna search a little on wetwebmedia for some suggestions, but I just thought I'd ask here. Thanks

Yeah, thats it for sure. 100% positive. I looked on wetwebmedia and Mr. Fenner says they're good, harmless helpful filter feeders and to enjoy them. I see them on my MagFloat's and next to my PH's. They're spreading like crazy. I think its cool, but when I decide to get fish around the middle of May I'd like one that'll snack on them now and then. I think maybe the 6 line wrasse may, but I'm sure if I want to get one yet. If theres a problem let me know, or if I should let em be I will. But I am absolutly sure that they are those that you posted with the link.

Ok, yeah they are not bad at all; as mentioned harmless little filter feeders. I am not sure of any fish that will eat them; I tried to search around but came up with nothing.

Cool, thanks for looking Scott. I guess I'll let them be for now since they're not bad. I also have a piece of LR thats starting to sprout some sort of macro(long leaves, almost looks like kelp, very small right now, but grows everyday, sprouting out of the coraline thats maroon in color and has a velvet look to it), in a few places actually. I may put those chunks in the fuge when its on and running. Also, I think some valonia(?) is growing. Little balls of algae, very tiny right now, about 1/16th of an inch, maybe an 1/8th. I hear it can be a nuisance in time, same as the macro(?). If its a good plan, I'll put those pieces in the fuge, and replace the weight with new fully cured rock from my LFS(very reputable). I wont have fish, so think it'll be ok. Thanks again for the replies, I appreciate it.

Hi Leddy!
You might want to do a search on both Sargassum and Valonia to see the best ways to handle them both before they get out of control. Scott Z. |

I was just checking out my tank where I had seen the valonia(?). I had noticed the algae about two or three days ago, when I had moved my scarlet hermit to the other rock structure (if you look at my gallery you can see the 2 separate rock piles). The crab had been living on the left pile for about a week, so I moved it to the right rock structure. I was just checking my tank out with the flash light where I had seen the valonia on the right rock structure, and didn't see as much, just one really small bubble. Do scarlets control this stuff, maybe peppermint shrimp since I have 2 of them? It must have happened today because last night I was saw more bigger bubbles of the type in the same spot. Everyday I see something new or different or growing or etc etc, so I'm reading and learning, and this site is a great place for info. Thanks
