Whats the best weir,overflow,standpipe?

Whats the best weir,overflow,standpipe?

Hiya guys i am sorting out my new tank and thinking what to do with it, as this thread:

help with my new set-up.

and for the overflow was thinking of using a durso stanpipe, the dual standpipes in one overflow chamber.

But was wondering what you guys think of these overflows, and whether they are as quite as everyone says they are.

Thanx Andrew

Hi Pomme,

The standpipes are vey helpful in quieting the noise from an overflow; either the durso or stockman style pipes will do the trick. The only problem with them is occassionally it takes a bit of adjusting to get them to the point they don't flush; it's a matter of adjusting how much air flow they get.

The only problem I see with adding 2 standpipes to one overflow is being able to put them behind an overflow that will accept as much water as the 2 standpipes. The overflow in our standard AGA aquarium will only flow about 800 - 900gph (estimated) but our 1.25" standpipe, in a 1" bulkhead will flow much more than that.

I use a modified Durso standpipe setup in my External Overflow, and it reduced the sound level considerably. I might experiment with the smooth PVC Sched 40 pipe as the downtube rather than the corrugated flexible hose currently attached, as I think that would eliminate most of the rest of the noise I hear (water rushing through the pipe itself).

I have had people happily sleep on the pull out bed in the living room, right next to the tank - I even had to replace one powerhead because I could hear it over the overflow !

do you think the one with the holes in the cap or the air hose with tap are better?

I think the holes in the cap are better. Typically adding a little valve doesn't allow enough air to flow in; for mine I have 3 - 1/8" holes drilled in the cap.

cool thanx scott will do the holes then.

would one single weir be better, then they will definatley be level, so the dursos will be getting an even flow to them.

for my size tank and i am wating around 3000l/h turnover from the sump , what size overflow do you think i need, would 8" by 3" be okay, with 1 1/2" piping?

I would go with dual overflows with 1 pipe each. 1.5" piping would require a 1.25" hole but yes, that would be good. 2 - 1.25" holes with 1.5" pipes should flow about 3000gph I would guess.
